The defender impressed in the Merseyside derby and now looks for more first-team minutes.

20-year-old Liverpool native Tyias Browning made his Everton debut in the most tense of situations, coming on down a goal to Liverpool at Anfield. But the young defender managed to put aside his nerves with an impressive performance, replacing veteran Tony Hibbert and contributing to Phil Jagielka's equalizing goal.

Blues' boss Roberto Martinez showed confidence in the young defender, and praised him after the game:

"Tyias Browning showed an incredible composure, great pace and gave us real penetration down that side. I thought Tony Hibbert and Tyias Browning did an incredible job for us."

Browning discussed his debut on the Everton website:

"When I was told I was going on, it was nerves more than anything. It was a big game to come into but I thought I did well and it was a good result for us in the end."

Having played for the first time with the first-team, now Browning is looking for more minutes at that level:

"I was pleased with myself and hopefully I did enough to get selected again. I just need to wait for my next opportunity now and hopefully take it when it comes."

Those minutes could come as early as Thursday, when the Toffees travel to Russia to take on FC Krasnodar.

Tim Howard – 6

A mixed day for Howard, who ended up facing surprisingly little in the way of testing shots from Liverpool’s underwhelming forward line of Mario Balotelli, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic. A strong save from Lallana’s early header aside, the American had little to do in what was a fairly scrappy game. Howard should arguably not have been beaten from Steven Gerrard’s second half free kick, though he then went on to make a crucial save from Balotelli soon after.

Tony Hibbert – 5

Thankfully, Hibbert was afforded far more protection at Anfield than he was at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday, but that still didn’t stop him from looking painfully out of his depth against the mobility of Raheem Sterling et al. He can be counted on to run all day, and a hard, but clean, tackle on Balotelli provided a rare second half highlight, but most Evertonians breathed a sigh of relief when the right back was withdrawn for Tyias Browning.

John Stones – 9

Restored to his favoured position at centre half, John Stones was magnificent in his second derby start. Where last year he toiled on the right while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge ran riot, this year the young Englishman was composed, muscular, and above all elegant in his defensive play. It’s this sort of display that looks set to keep Stones at the heart of the Everton defence this season, and, fingers crossed, for many years to come.

Phil Jagielka – 8

Many of Everton’s problems have stemmed from the centre of defence this season, and captain Phil Jagielka has been as culpable as any player in terms of turning in underwhelming performances during the current campaign. Not so in the derby. Jagielka was tough and assured alongside his young defensive partner, and gave the Liverpool attack very little to work with in and around the Everton box. The fact that he scored a thronking, 30-yard, volleyed equaliser right into the Kop didn’t hurt either.

Leighton Baines – 6

Forced to hold back on his forward runs after the introduction of Aiden McGeady, Baines had another solid, if unspectacular game at left back. For the most part he nullified what little threat Markovic posed on the Liverpool right, but he never looked entirely comfortable against the physicality of Balotelli, clumsily giving away the free kick from which Gerrard gave the hosts the lead.

Gareth Barry – 5

The derby saw Gareth Barry give one of his poorer Everton performances, partly influenced, no doubt, by his very early booking. Hassled and harried by Sterling, Lallana and Jordan Henderson, the veteran midfielder wasn’t allowed his usual time on the ball, and his passing – both long and short – suffered as a result.

James McCarthy – 6

Given the unenviable task of assisting Tony Hibbert against a very quick Liverpool attack, McCarthy performed admirably, despite being allowed little time on the ball throughout. But while defensively solid, the Irishman struggled to pick a pass when venturing forward, and wasn’t helped by Roberto Martinez’s 4-3-3, or an unusually panicked performance from his midfield partner, Barry.

Mohamed Besic – 5

Several interceptions contributed to an effective defensive display from Besic, but complacency and poor choices going forward continue to be major issues with the young midfielder’s game. It’s been a difficult start to life on Merseyside for the Bosnian, though to his credit, he did form a valuable part of the midfield unit that, for the most part, prevented the Liverpool attack from breaking behind Everton’s defence.

Kevin Mirallas – 6

Mirallas had a lively start, demonstrating his now customary derby day fire in the opening exchanges at Anfield, but suffered a nasty-looking injury mid-way through the first half. Hurtling into the Liverpool penalty area, the Toffees’ best attacking player pulled up sharply before collapsing into a heap, clutching his hamstring. Everton, that…

Steven Naismith – 6

Naismith worked well between the Liverpool lines during the first half, combining nicely with Lukaku and Mirallas before the latter’s early exit, and providing a welcome outlet for the Blues’ often beleaguered midfielders. As the game went on, however, he was marginalised, with the opposition trio of Henderson, Gerrard and Sterling growing more dominant during the second period.

Romelu Lukaku – 5

Once again stationed wide on the right, Lukaku was given the dual task of attacking the Liverpool wing while keeping Alberto Moreno from raiding forward at Tony Hibbert. The latter was accomplished fairly well, though the former, it’s fair to say was not. Clumsy in possession and lethargic on the ball – particularly in the second half – Lukaku had a game to forget, though admittedly his service was equally disappointing.

Subs

Aiden McGeady – 6

Brought in for Kevin Mirallas following the Belgian’s early injury, McGeady made the most of his few opportunities, but wasn’t able to produce any sort of sustained threat on the counter. Had he been able to pick out Lukaku, having found himself through in the Liverpool penalty area in the first half, the game would have taken on a very different complexion.

Tyias Browning – 7

It’s one thing to make your Everton debut in a heated Merseyside derby at Anfield, but it’s quite another to come on and sure up your side’s shaky defence with 20 minutes to go. Browning didn’t see an awful lot of the ball during his memorable cameo, but he demonstrated enough pace, skill and composure to suggest it won't be long before we see him in the first team again.

Samuel Eto’o – N/A

Man of the Match – John Stones

The perfect combination of style and steel, Stones is a very special centre back. In the three games he has partnered Jagielka this season Everton have conceded twice; in the other five, they’ve conceded 16. It’s not difficult to see the difference the outstanding young Englishman makes.

It is a well-worn cliché to talk about turning points and season-changing goals, but Phil Jagielka’s howitzer at Anfield on Saturday certainly gives Everton a solid platform to build on after a distinctly shaky start to the season.

Had Liverpool clung on for the win then Everton’s performance would have been harshly assessed, merely adding to the pressure on Roberto Martinez and his squad.

A failure to truly test Simon Mignolet and put pressure on an out-of-form back four (a regular occurrence in Anfield derbies) would have been levelled at Martinez and his players, who have already had to bear a fair amount of criticism so far this season.

It can’t be denied that Liverpool were marginally the better side, but they were a shadow of the team that ripped through Everton in January, yet the Blues failed to exploit their apparent weaknesses – yet again.

But Jagielka’s late intervention means Evertonians feel like their side has won, a feeling accentuated by the obvious crushing disappointment of the Liverpool supporters who believed their side had done enough to sneak the victory.

Martinez would have been positive regardless of the scoreline, but his post-match comments carry far more weight when it has a positive result behind it. Unlike at Swansea on Tuesday when his assessment of a listless display left many scratching their heads.

Jagielka, unfairly targeted by so-called England fans after the Three Lions’ failure at the World Cup (he was below-par yes, but so were most of his team-mates), has now been labelled a player reborn, someone who has exorcized the demons of Brazil 2014 and is edging his way back to his best.

But while his goal will understandably steal the headlines, he was ably backed up by an impressive supporting cast.

Alongside him John Stones put in a masterful display that suggests he is going to be a regular for club and country for the next decade. And with the blues defending deep to negate the pace of Raheem Sterling, the much-maligned Tony Hibbert was tenacious for an hour in his first Premier League start for two years. Whether he should still be a first-team member is up for debate, but he didn’t let anyone down on this occasion.

Neither did his replacement Tyias Browning, who was making his Premier League debut but played like a seasoned veteran. His pace and determination to chase down a long ball also played a key part in the equalising goal. If left back Luke Garbutt can build on his performance at the Liberty Stadium in midweek (one of few players to emerge from that game with credit) then Everton have two promising, young understudies for the rampaging first-choice duo of Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

Everton’s attacking instincts were stunted against Gerrard and co, not helped by a nasty looking hamstring injury to Kevin Mirallas midway through the first half, but they have already demonstrated this season that they can score against anyone.

If they can marry that attacking play with their new found defensive resilience, then we may finally see something close to the side we saw last season.

And if we do, then we owe a lot to one big swing of our captain’s right foot.

Everton leave Anfield with a point following a wonder goal from captain Phil Jagielka.

This week's post match analysis will focus on the main talking points of the Merseyside derby this weekend of Everton were rather lucky to escape with a point. A wonder goal from Phil Jagielka in injury time saved the day but the Blues were mostly undeserving as a result of a poor attacking performance and of course left Anfield with their obligatory injury.

Howard is up and down

Many were questioning Tim Howard before this game following his horror show against Crystal Palace last week. In all truth, Howard was superb in this game, denying both Mario Balotelli's free-kick and close range effort with a dangerous Adam Lallana header also being turned away superbly. Despite this, the American will be disappointed to have not saved Steven Gerrard's free-kick, which was at a comfortable height, as it looked like he had dived too early. Nonetheless, much improved upon last week's showing.

Stones and Coleman are key

John Stones is the epitome of the modern day central defender and surely cannot be left out of Everton's side any more, especially giving Sylvain Distin's poor performances so far. The young Englishman was composed on the ball, strong in the tackle and a literal touch of class in the heart of the Everton defence, never looking troubled by Liverpool's attacking talents.

As much as John Stones' presence was sorely needed in the Everton defence, Seamus Coleman's was hugely missed. The Irishman adds not only defensive strength to the Blues defence but a massive attacking threat and his absence was sorely missed at Anfield. When the full back is missing, the whole of Everton's line up looks lopsided and they will need him fit and firing as soon as possible.

Mirallas injury will be huge

Just as the Blues could look to build on this massive point, they lose one of their key players for what could be a long time. It's almost obligatory for Everton to suffer a big injury at Anfield and it seems this time it was the turn of Belgian Kevin Mirallas who pulled up with what could be a bad hamstring injury. Hopefully it isn't as serious as it looks because Everton have little options to replace him long term and his presence would have made a huge difference to yesterday's game.

Lukaku isn't a winger

Okay, so I get that this tactic has worked twice against Arsenal and Martinez was putting Lukaku up against Alberto Moreno in an attempt to exploit the defender, but this was a move that back fired massively for the Blues. Lukaku was poor out on the right wing, spending most of the game miscontrolling the ball and giving it away and looking entirely isolated without the support of Coleman. It's a mystery why he was left out there all game. As a side note, the Belgian really needs to work on his hold up play and first touch, which at the minute are not those of a £28m striker.

Utilise Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o is being massively underutilised by Everton at the minute and it is baffling to see. Roberto Martinez seems to have bought in to the ‘old man' notion of the striker and is only bringing him on with games dying out. As the Liverpool back line dwindled and sat deeper yesterday, Eto'o could have been brought on much earlier and had a bigger impact on the final score. Hopefully he is given more game time across the year as he brings a touch of class that this side could do with.

Honourable Mention

It would be amiss to not mention Jagielka's strike now wouldn't it, and what a hit it was. The defender didn't just blast that in to the back of the net, it dipped and swerved beautifully to leave Mignolet without a hope and the Liverpool fans utterly dejected. He admitted in his interview that he just ‘took a swing' but if that is the result, he can swing all he likes in future. Just for your viewing pleasure, here's that video again. Sumptious!

I take a look at the 20 year-old's performance in the derby on Saturday and why he has to be Everton's future now.

I don't often take to player reviews as it's not something I believe in. A team makes the game not a player. But every now and again comes a rare exception and if I had the choice of picking the man of the match for our trip across the park this weekend end, John Stones gets my vote.

I'm going to make this clear before I continue, I slated Roberto Martinez in my last article for the lack of defensive strength our side has been showing, but Saturday was a huge improvement. Further to that Phil Jagielka had the best game he has had in a while, he is always rated at a 7 or 8 for me but his performance may have taken that rating a notch higher. I also think Jagielka has had a brilliant impact on Stonesy, the pair dovetail each other very well and are a true centre back pairing. Both seem to be calm and composed most of the time on the ball and Stones in particular enjoys getting forward, using 1-2's or knock-and-go passes.

That all leads me on nicely to our number 26 himself. Stones has played the majority of this season coming from the bench and starting at, as most would say, his unnatural position of right back. I now think he is ready to step up and replace Sylvain Distin in our starting 11. This is absolutely nothing against Distin, who has been and still is an important player to us, but you can't play Stones anywhere else but centre back.

On Saturday, he (Stones) provided us with a calm, composed, mature performance. Something you would only see the likes of from some of the best experienced centre backs around. He allowed Jagielka to play a more comfortable role alongside him.

Stones shows class and potential most other centre backs in the league lack. His tackling from start to finish on Saturday prevented opportunities and prevented goals. What 20 year-old centre back is or has been in the Premier league, or any other league for that matter, that has the composure and maturity to A. Keep a centre forward quiet all afternoon, B. Not pick up a booking in a derby and C. Show brilliant quality on the ball to take us forward to attack?

It would have been easy for John to kick out at Mario Balotelli or get frustrated with how the game was going. He didn't, he held his head together and almost carried the team forward. He was seen on occasions motivating the team with only 5-10 minutes left to keep pushing forward, the lad has an old head on a young body. The position he took up all game was one that covered Balotelli when Everton were off the ball but allowed him to get forward in the gaps, should he need to, when we were on the ball. I think he is up there with the best signings Moyes made for us before his departure. The kid hasn't even begun!

Phil Jagielka, the god of thunder, smites Liverpool's dreams of a derby victory with a lightning bolt in stoppage time.

Considering how I felt things might go in the first Merseyside Derby of the season, things went considerably better than I'd expected. Full disclosure, my alarm didn't wake me up at 6:45am when the match kicked off for me here in the US. Instead, I woke up just as the match entered stoppage time in the second half! OH NO!! I rushed to turn on the TV and was just in time to see Phil Jagielka save the day with an absolute missile goal.

Going back through the match on my DVR at high speed has allowed me to make some observations though, so here goes.

Everton needed a positive defensive performance, if for nothing else than to quiet down the critics just a bit. While things have been rough this season at the back, it's hard to fathom that Martinez will just sit there and not make adjustments in training.

Both teams probably should have been rewarded penalties. Lukaku was clearly brought down inside the box but his body shielded the referee's view, so he never saw Alberto Moreno's arm that was subtly pulling our big striker to the ground. On the other end, Gareth Barry got away with a handball after he raised his arm to block Raheem Sterling's strike. So it goes.

Barry probably could've been sent off in the first half after committing at least three clear yellow card offenses.

I really hate Steven Gerrard.

There was an element of luck to Everton's day, combined with a solid performance by Tim Howard. Liverpool and their fans especially will no doubt be lamenting missed opportunities, but at some point you'd think they'd grasp that this is football and sometimes things don't go your way. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I don't think we'll ever really know how Jagielka pulled off that equalizing goal. I'm fairly certain he could try that 50 times in a full-speed match and not be able to recreate that bit of magic.
