Everton wouldn't agree to match the fee United and Aston Villa had agreed to earlier in the day

After a long negotiation, the deal that would have brought Tom Cleverley to Everton on loan has fallen through. According to Simon Stone, the Toffees wouldn't agree to match the fee that United and Aston Villa had agreed to earlier in the day.

Cleverley had been linked to Everton, as well as Aston Villa and Hull City, but it looks like he will be staying in Manchester. United had agreed to sell the midfielder to Villa earlier Monday but he refused to agree to personal terms with the Villains, and the deal fell through.

It now appears more and more likely that Everton won't be making any signings today.

Everton are still in the hunt for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley even with the clock ticking towards the transfer deadline.

Aston Villa were willing to pay £8million for the England international but talks reportedly broke down over wages. That left Everton as the only club in the running to sign the 25-year-old.

However, Everton are only willing to sanction a loan deal for Cleverley with his club Man Utd only willing to consider a permanent transfer.

Something clearly has to give.

Intrepid Sky Sports News presenter Alan Irwin has been told by sources within the club (when he is not being bothered by sex toy wielding Everton supporters) that the Toffees are willing to work right up until the deadline to secure Cleverley's signature, with manager Roberto Martinez reportedly still at Finch Farm.

Time is certainly against them though and all parties are going to have to move fast if they are to getting everything in place before the clock strikes 11pm.

Everton are not putting together a deadline day deal for Porto defender Rolando, according to Sky Sports News reporter Alan Irwin.

The 29-year-old was linked with a late move to Goodison Park after falling out of favour at Porto. The centre back was sent out on loan twice last season to Napoli and Inter and seemingly has no future with his parent club.

With Everton reportedly keen on bolstering their defence after a shaky start to the season at the back, Rolando was believed to be high on their wanted list.

However, reporter Alan Irwin, Sky Sports News' man outside Finch Farm, says he has spoken to sources within the club and they have dismissed those reports.

With the clock ticking towards the deadline it certainly appears this year is not going to come close to the drama we had 12 months ago, when Romelu Lukaku, James McCarthy and Gareth Barry signed on in the last few hours of the window.

But given the deals already done earlier in the summer I don't think Everton fans can complain too much about the club's transfer business should they fail to conclude any deals in the next few hours.

The South African was ruled out of Saturday’s game against Chelsea after suffering a groin injury inside the first 10 minutes the week before against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old defender is off to Blackburn for an undisclosed fee.

Everton have sold defender Shane Duffy to Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old joined Everton's youth system in 2008, but never got a chance to make an impact with the first team. During his five seasons with the club, he only made 10 appearances and spent most of his time out on loan.

He made his first team debut with the Toffees against AEK Athens in 2009, but is probably most well known for a freak training ground accident that forced him to undergo emergency surgery after he suffered a lacerated liver. The defender took to Twitter on Monday to say goodbye to Everton fans.

"I'm very excited about the new challenge in my career and I can't wait to get going. Sad about leaving Everton but can't thank everyone at the club for what they have done for me from the first day I got there. The fans have been amazing and I will always follow Everton. I would like to wish everyone at the club every success and hope everything goes well."

Roberto Martinez reportedly wants to bring the out of choice midfielder to Goodison on a season-long loan

Reports have been swirling all morning that Everton are trying to bring Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverely to Goodison Park on a season long loan. The Liverpool Echo reported that news this morning, but now it appears that Queen Park Rangers are getting involved as well in the chase for Cleverley.

Harry Redknapp has been busy so far on Monday having reportedly gotten Liverpool to agree to a deal for midfielder Fabio Borini. The traditional big spender is desperate to bulk up his squad as they look to avoid dropping back to the Championship just like they did at the end of the 2012/13 season.

QPR will likely have the money that United want for Cleverley and the big question is whether or not Everton have enough cash. Hence the loan talk as Martinez appears to be trying to pull off another of his deadline day loan deals that worked so well for the club last season.

At this point though, there are just rumors surrounding Cleverley, but all that could change over the next six hours.

According to a report from Belgium, the Greek side are hoping to sign David Henan out from under Everton's nose.

It seems like the rumored David Henan to Everton deal has been dragging on for awhile now, and it really has. Still, it looked like the final details would be ironed out on Monday and the deal would get done.

Yes, it's that time of year again....

Let the chaos begin.

Transfer deadline day, one of the most frantic, illogical and down right ridiculous days of the football calendar.

It's a day where common sense seems to go out of the window, from people believing any old rumour on Twitter to desperate chairman and equally desperate managers frantically spending millions of pounds in the final few hours of the window.

Roberto Martinez seems the type of guy who doesn't get caught up in the whole deadline day hysteria, though he may well be tempted given the way his side have defended this season.

While I disagree with those who are saying that both Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin should be jettisoned from the squad (knee jerk?) defensive reinforcements are needed, as well as hours on the training ground!

Therefore defence could well be the main position that Everton will be shopping for in the final hours of the window.

However, given the unpredictable nature of the day, they may well be plenty of incomings and outgoings across several positions, who knows!

We will do our best here at RBM to keep on top of things, this open thread will be running all day to discuss the latest rumours, Jim White's tie, etc etc..

The Twitter feed will also run all day and any rumours with even a shred of credibility will be examined by a member of the team!

We already have an early round-up of Everton transfer rumours here, these may well be dismissed later in the day or one of them may end up at Finch Farm, on transfer deadline day you just never know.

If you hear any rumours, or want to comment on any deals then please have your day below.

Oh, and strap yourselves in, this could be a bumpy ride!
