Everton picked up a couple of loan signings right at the end of the transfer window - here we feature Romelu Lukaku, who's here until the end of the season from Chelsea.

UPDATE: Lukaku will wear the #17 jersey at Everton

We were honored to speak with Graham MacAree, Lead Editor of SB Nation Soccer and also of SB Nation's Chelsea blog We Ain't Got No History about their beast of a striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian has been turning heads since last season in the Premier League when he scored 17 times in 35 appearances for defensive-minded West Bromwich Albion.

Position: Forward

Age: 20

Birth Date: May 13, 1993

Birth Place: Antwerp, Belgium (Belgian international, 21 caps)

Height: 1.90m

Weight: 94 kg

------------------------------------------------------

RBM - Tell us about Lukaku's style of play?

WAGNH - Lukaku is both stronger and faster than more or less every centre back in the Premier League. That makes him very difficult to play against -- he uses the speed to beat high lines and his sheer size to open up spaces against low blocks. He can hold up the ball and pass effectively as well.

RBM - What are his strengths?

WAGNH - His greatest strengths are his phyiscal attributes. He's almost impossible to get off the ball one on one. Defenders bounce off him. It's kind of hilarious.

RBM - How about his weaknesses?

WAGNH - His touch and finishing could use work, and he's not spectacular in the air yet. Those three traits have all improved significantly since he's been in England, however, and I'd expect that by the end of the year none of them are noticable as 'weaknesses'.

RBM - Any off-the-field issues we should know about?

WAGNH - Lukaku's a consumate professional. Seriously, he might have the best attitude I've ever heard of in a young 'star'. He's obsessed with football and deeply committed to improving, ignoring distractions that might derail him. No off-field problems at all.

RBM - Your closing thoughts?

WAGNH - Take good care of him. We'll be wanting him back.

------------------------------------------------------

Our thanks to Graham for taking the time to talk to us. Drop us your questions regarding Lukaku in the comments section and we'll forward them to Graham for his answers.

Everton picked up a couple of loan signings right at the end of the transfer window - here we feature Gareth Barry, who's here until the end of the season from Manchester City.

UPDATE: Barry will wear the #18 jersey at Everton

After Everton picked up veteran midfielder Gareth Barry in the transfer window, we spoke with sonics097 of SB Nation's Manchester City blog Bitter and Blue, who only agreed to give this interview on condition that we pass up on this year's traditional City-beatdown at Goodison. The English international has failed to find a regular spot in the starting squad at City, and will be hoping to get some playing time at Everton with the World Cup fast approaching next summer. Barry was at Aston Villa for 12 years before making the switch to City in 2009.

Position: Midfielder

Age: 32

Birth Date: Feb 23, 1981

Birth Place: Hastings (English international, 53 caps)

Height: 5' 11" (1.80m)

Weight: 178 lbs (80.6 kg)

------------------------------------------------------

RBM - Tell us about Barry's style of play?

B&B - Barry is a traditional, old-school CDM. You won't see him doing anything flashy and thankfully he never tries to do so either. He'll get up and down the pitch primarily shielding the back line and breaking up attacks through the middle with efficiency. He's also got a good engine on him and I can't remember any games in which we needed to sub Gaz Baz out due to lack of stamina. He's a hard worker.

RBM - What are his strengths?

B&B - His strengths lie primarily in mental skills, and raw defensive ability. He reads the game extremely well and thus is hardly ever out of position. He's got a good eye for anticipation and isn't overly aggressive. A yellow card here and there, but that's the nature of the position I suppose. Though he's average in the air, he'll win a ton of 50-50 ground battles throughout the match. Perhaps the most underrated aspect of his game is his distribution out of the deep midfield; he recycles possession quite well and is a good short-range passer of the ball.

RBM - How about his weaknesses?

B&B - His biggest weakness is pace. With aging legs, he won't keep up with the faster attacking players. He also won't offer a whole lot in the final third of the pitch. Given City's possession-based style of play, we are often camped out in the opposition's half of the field and Barry will typically go about as far up as 18-30 yards out- it's rare to see him make an appearance in the box. His long range shooting is OK, as are his technical skills. He'll retain the ball well but not do much in the way of creativity.

RBM - Any off-the-field issues we should know about?

B&B - This is a player that comes with absolutely zero baggage. He's a genuinely nice, quiet guy. Judging by the behind-the-scenes videos put up on City's website he gets on with just about everyone in the team and is a helpful hand whenever necessary.

RBM - Your closing thoughts?

B&B - Everton fans might not realize how lucky they are in getting Barry for the year just yet. This is a loyal servant whom City fans miss already, and it's barely been 24 hours. Without a doubt he has been one of the most vital pieces of City's puzzle over the last 5 seasons and he has never gotten the praise he deserves. He is a player that operates in the shadows of the game and does the team's dirty work, the seemingly boring link in the middle that often gets overlooked for not being the most stylish of players. But he just gets the job done. Game in, and game out. There is no endorsement that I can come up with that is more telling than the fact that David Silva voted for Barry as the club's player of the season in the year we won the title. He might not play for us anymore, but we're still rooting for him.

-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks go out to sonics097 for answering our questions about Barry. Feel free to drop us a line in the comments with your questions regarding Barry, and we'll go back to him for some answers.

Everton made out really well right at the end of the transfer window - here we feature James McCarthy, who came in from Wigan Athletic.

UPDATE: McCarthy will wear the #16 jersey at Everton

We've often spoken to Kieran, the editor over at the Wigan Athletic blog Pie Eaters Footie, for the Q&As ahead of games. Having watched James McCarthy over the years, he was the best person to give us the scoop on what to expect after he transferred over yesterday for £13 million.

Position: Midfielder

Age: 22

Birth Date: Nov 12, 1990

Birth Place: Scotland (Republic of Ireland international, 16 caps)

Height: 1.80m

Weight: 72 kg

------------------------------------------------------

RBM - Tell us about James McCarthy's style of play?

PEF - Dynamic box to box midfielder. Talented both on and off the ball.

On it James loves to drive forward forcing the defenders onto the back foot while he gets his head up and looks to spread the ball to other players or look for that cheap shot at goal and catch the keeper out.

Off the ball and James is probably chasing the ball down and working at a 110% to win it back and try and get possession back for his team. Nothing but commitment and desire from this player.

RBM - What are his strengths?

PEF - James has a great engine and manages to just keep going all game, and will win the ball for 90 minutes continually. A clever footballing bring as he knows when to close the player down best to win the ball via either an interception or a wonderful tackle. There can also be the odd spectacular goal when James gets forward and close enough to the goal to have a go.

RBM - How about his weaknesses?

PEF - Can sometimes be drawn out of position with his over exuberance to close players down and win the ball.

Also he is prone to the odd poor pass.

RBM - Any off-the-field issues we should know about?

PEF - No as shown by the transfer saga with him, a very humble and honest lad who just wants to play football at the highest level.

RBM - Your closing thoughts?

PEF - Wish we could have kept hold of him (Wigan). Yet we got a fair price for a player who has yet to really reach his full potential and I wish him all the best of luck in the future as he could go right to the top of the footballing pyramid.

------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again to Kieran, and we wish Wigan all the best as they attempt to come back to the Premier League. If you have any questions about McCarthy, or really any of the numerous Wigan players we now have, drop us a line in the comments and Kieran will be glad to help us out.

The transfer window has closed, and unlike previous years Everton has actually done a fair bit of business. Including deals made in July, the club has brought in 7 new players while losing two names of note. It went down to the wire, but Everton has managed to strengthen the squad for current season, but questions about the long-term outlook of the club are still hazy.

Joel Robles: (In £3.5 million, Atletico Madrid)

This could be one of the biggest moves of the transfer window. Robles did an excellent job at Wigan during the spring, and even if he doesn't take over for Tim Howard until the American's contract expires his appearance is already paying dividends. Robles has shown to be a bit raw at times, but Howard has had some great performances during his 3 matches in charge. If Robles comes good as well this sum will seem like an absolute pittance.

Arouna Kone: (In £6 million, Wigan)

This seemed to be a poor move when it happened, and Kone's confidence breaking performance in the League Cup has done nothing to changed anyone's opinion. While it is still early in the season, it is hard to see this moving working out for anyone, especially with the moves Everton made on deadline day.

Antolin Alcaraz: (In Free transfer, Wigan)

This was a free transfer so it is hard to get too upset about it. I don't know how much Alcaraz will actually play, but cover in the back is always nice to have. At this point it seems like Alcaraz is the 4th choice CB, but it would seem like Shane Duffy should be ahead of him in the pecking order. The only real question is how much his wages are costing the club, but it can't be much if Kenwright agreed to the move.

James McCarthy: (In £13.5 million, Wigan)

Honestly this is a move that we probably won't be able to pass judgement on for several seasons. McCarthy has the talent to play in the Premier League, and he did very well during his time at Wigan. The 22-year old has age on his side and he already has 4 years of experience in the EPL. The real question on this one is the price. Much like how the Marouane Fellaini deal was first viewed by Evertonians, many are complaining about the price. £13.5 million is a princely sum to a club where the record few is only a few million quid more. If McCarthy can match Fellaini's contributions the price will be forgotten, but it will be a bit before we can say that.

Romelu Lukaku: (In Loan, Chelsea)

This is the star move from Everton during the window. Jelavic does not seem to have his goal touch back, Kone whiffed worse than Yakubu in South Africa, and as much as we would all love to try out Vellios some, Everton needs goals now. 17 goals in 35 games for West Brom last season means Evertonians are already salivating. With Baines, Barkley, and Mirallas providing service, Lukaku should equal or improve on his goal total. The one note for concern is that he really wanted to stay at Chelsea this season after being told he was in the club's plans. Thankfully by all accounts he is a consumate professional and should arrive ready to work and score some cracking goals.

Gareth Barry: (In Loan, Manchester City)

The move at a basic level doesn't bother me. Even after replacing Fellaini with McCarthy Everton needs some midfield depth. Our depth includes McCarthy, Osman, Gibson, and then Heitinga. Adding Barry in helps, especially with how often Gibson is injured. The problem with this move is we are paying Barry's entire £125,000 a week wages., For a 32-year old midfielder it seems silly. I find it hard to believe Martinez couldn't find a younger player with a third of those wages that would fit in his system.

Gerard Deulofeu: (In Loan, Barcelona)

A lot of folks are excited about this move, but the concern has to be just how much time he will be getting. Deulofeu appears to have to beat out Kevin MIrallas for playing time in the league, and it is hard to say how loyal Martinez will be to Mirallas. Worst case Gerard is an often used sub and helps lead the squad deep into a cup run or two. Keep expectations low here despite how much talent the teenager has.

Victor Anichebe: ( Out £6.5 million, West Brom)

There had been a rumor or two of Big Vic's departure earlier in the week, but they seemed to be more of the typical silly season nonsense rather than anything substantial. Then when everything broke loose.Anichebe was headed to West Brom for a silly sum. This was a fantastic piece of business, and despite Jelavic's poor goal scoring record it shows what a bargain buy the Croatian was.

Marouane Fellaini: (Out £27.5 million, Manchester United)

We've known this was coming for several months, but it still took till 11pm to finish it off. Fellaini going for such a price is fantastic news for the club. This transfer alone was able to fund every other move for the window, and Martinez should have a nice little sum for a January purchase or two. We should all pause and laugh because United paid just about what they initially bid for both Fellaini and Baines, especially when they could have had Fellaini for £4-5 million less if they had actually activated his release clause. Silly rich teams.

Now the squad has been strengthened in the right places. The central midfield has a bit of depth to it, and more importantly there is quality to that depth. Apparently we have a real striker who does strikerish things like score goals, and we kept Leighton Baines. Slowly Everton is approaching the point where any transfers are about replacing aging talent or players that have been sold rather than making massive upgrades to the squad.

Looking ahead to January, there is still some depth that would be nice to fill out. It would be nice to bring in another striker, preferably one that will stay past the summer, and another central midfielder would be nice to add a bit more depth. A center back also wouldn't hurt, especially with the age of the ones we have with Premier League experience. It may not be as exciting as this transfer window, but it could be the difference between Europe and another disappointing season.

New signing relieved to have finalised Toffees move

New Everton signing James McCarthy is delighted that his late deadline-day beating move went through and says the choice to join the club was a ‘no-brainer’.

The Republic of Ireland international has been linked with Everton all summer but in true Toffees style it only went through within minutes of the deadline on Monday evening.

The main sticking point was the fee, with Everton seeing two bids rejected – the second very publicly by rent-a-gob Dave Whelan.

However, flush with cash following the sale of Maoruane Fellaini to Manchester United (though the club insist they were never relying on that deal to fund others) terms over a £13million transfer were agreed.

Speaking after finally putting pen-to-paper on his new contract, McCarthy told the club’s website:

"To be honest I am over the moon. The last few hours have been nerve-racking and I am delighted to be here.

"Once I knew Everton were interested there was no going back - I wanted to come here and try and establish myself.

"I worked under the manager for four years at Wigan, they were four brilliant years. I loved every minute of that. I know some of the boys who are here so it was a no-brainer to be honest."

While he is certainly no Felliani, he does represent a player closer to the style of play Roberto Martinez is trying to employ.

Those who know him well are full of praise not just for his ability but his potential.

So while £13million may seem steep now, it may be a worthwhile investment given he is just 22-years-old.

He certainly seems to fit into a new look midfield along side Gareth Barry, with Ross Barkley, Kevin Mirallas and Gerard Deulofeu further forward.

How do you think McCarthy will fit in? have your say below.

New loan signing looking forward to working with Toffees boss.

Everton new-boy Gareth Barry says manager Roberto Martinez and his style of football was key in his decision to move to Goodison.

The England midfielder completed a late deadline day loan to Everton on Monday evening after negotiations over the payment of his wages were finally thrashed out.

He brings much needed experience to the centre of Everton’s midfield and should be a calming influence alongside youngsters James McCarthy and Ross Barkley.

The former Aston Villa man’s City contract also expires at the end of the season, meaning there is an option to sign him permanently on a free transfer should the move go well.

Speaking to the media the day after signing on, Barry revealed that he was looking forward to working under new boss Roberto Martinez.

"The way I've seen his teams play over the years as soon as he got his first management job in English football he's always tried to play the right style of football.

"When I've played against his teams it's always been interesting to see what formations he's played.

"He's made it difficult for the teams playing against him and the way he had plans to fit me into the squad was very encouraging - the manager had a big part to play.

"I've enjoyed coming to Goodison Park and playing in great atmospheres.

"The fans here are fantastic and they always make it tough for opposing teams so it will be great to be playing on their side."

Belgian takes to Twitter to praise Blues.

Marouane Fellaini has thanked Everton and the Everton fans for all their help and support during his time at the club.

The 25-year-old completed his much anticipated transfer to United late on Monday, with Everton receiving a hefty £27.5million fee for his services.

Fellaini is understandably excited about his move to Old Trafford and the opportunities that may bring, but he also took time out to remember the Toffees.

I just want to tell you: THANK YOU Everton and all the Evertonian fans for all these last years. @Everton

— Marouane Fellaini (@fellainiM) September 3, 2013

Fellaini leaves with goodwill from most Evertonians. The midfielder has been totally professional throughout this whole saga, never forgetting his responsibilities to Everton.

While other players go on strike, pick up ‘mysterious’ injuries or take to the media to force through moves, Fellaini has kept his head down and got on with it.

The generous fee also means Everton fans are not mourning his departure too much. David Moyes has made a right hash of this transfer window, particularly when it comes to Fellaini.

In allowing his £23.4millon release clause to expire he clearly felt he could get him on the cheap – hence his ‘derisory’ £28million double bid for Fellaini and Leighton Baines.

The eventual transfer fee represents a job well done for the Everton board as well as some fudged negotiating on Moyes’ part.

With the cash Roberto Martinez has also been able to add to the squad, so despite Fellaini's departure, the team actually looks stronger than it did at the start of the season.

One stayed and one departed, but that us not the only difference between Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines

Although we didn't expect it to go down to the wire in such outrageous fashion, Marouane Fellaini has moved on from Everton to join David Moyes at Manchester United.

The move cost the defending league champions 27.5 million pounds. That is a tremendous bit of business for your Blues. Especially considering that United wanted both Fellaini and Leighton Baines for a putrid 28 million just a few weeks ago.

Fellaini is an impact player, able to dictate the flow of a game when he feels like doing so. His best performance in an Everton shirt came against his new team on the opener last year, when he put on one of the best individual performances in recent Everton history.

When it was announced that Moyes was moving to United it set off several alarms in Merseyside that he was going to take some of our best players with him. Immediately, rumours ran rampant that Moyes was planning to come back for Leighton Baines and Fellaini.

Moyes was the man who brought the gigantic Belgian to Goodison Park from Standard Liege for a still club record 15 million pounds back in 2008. He also was the one who brought Baines on board.

The feeling around Goodison was that if Moyes wanted to pay up for the 'fro, he could take him -- but Baines was untouchable.

Why was this the case? Why wasn't Fellaini guarded with heels-dug-in in the same fashion that Baines was?

Everton could go out there and find a player who could do what Marouane Fellaini does, but there is no other Leighton Baines out there.

Baines creates more opportunities than any other player in all of Europe, he is a consummate professional, and has been the club's best asset for the past few seasons.

Now that Fellaini has moved on, new boy James McCarthy, Darren Gibson, and Ross Barkley are going to take over the middle of the pitch. Of the three only Barkley may have the impact that Fellaini had in his years at Goodison. However, had Baines moved on, we'd leave a glaring hole on the pitch.

Baines is the type of player a manager could build an entire squad around. He makes EVERY player on the pitch better with his play. He can take a good team, and turn them into a great one.

This is why Leighton Baines simply could not be moved this transfer season.

Now that the window has been slammed shut Evertonians can sleep better knowing that Baines will be patrolling that left sideline for the foreseeable future.

They now have time to work on a deal to keep one of, if not the most important player(s) in all of Europe at the club beyond this season.

Marouane Fellaini ought to be remembered as a sensational Blue. Even though he may have just been going through the motions to start this season, he provided us with some magic during his career at Goodison Park. We wish him the best and look forward to competing against him for a spot in the top four.

As for Leighton Baines, he remains irreplaceable, untouchable, and indubitable.
