The worst performance of the season against Huddersfield will sour moods for the next fortnight

If Marco Silva could take anything from Saturday’s lethargic 1-1 draw to Huddersfield Town, it offered him a microcosm of recent years at Goodison Park.

There was much of the purposeless passing synonymous with Roberto Martinez’s tenure, the sort of attacking impotence which cost Ronald Koeman (at least post-Romelu Lukaku), and just as with Sam Allardyce, an inability to fashion clear-cut chances.

Against a leading exponent of the dreadfully unambitious football plaguing much of today’s Premier League, Everton were the embodiment of footballing inertia. For all of Huddersfield’s time-wasting and referee Stuart Attwell’s poor display, the Toffees simply ran out of ideas. It was a story all too familiar to the blue half of Merseyside.

In November, Terriers boss David Wagner will celebrate three years in charge of the West Yorkshire club. On Saturday, his side had the manager’s imprint all over the pitch; every player evidently knew their respective roles, and though not aesthetically pleasing, Huddersfield played entirely to their strengths.

Huddersfield fans deify Wagner for achieving promotion to, and survival in, the Premier League, but he did not perform miracles at the John Smith’s Stadium overnight. When he replaced Chris Powell 15 games into the 2015/16 season, the club were 18th in the Championship, and finished the campaign a place worse off. It was not until the following year, when they won their place in the top flight, that Wagner really stamped his authority on his side.

David Wagner’s Huddersfield may not be pleasant to watch, but they are the product of excellent coaching

In this there is a lesson for Evertonians, even if they would justifiably not stand for such a limited style of play from their own team. For Silva to be expected to transcend Everton similarly after just four league matches is a fallacy; indeed, the more worrying sign here was that against a side with a discernible identity, the Blues were utterly faceless for much of the game.

When last season’s fixtures were revealed, Koeman received almost universal sympathy for a gruelling start, comprising trips to Chelsea and both Manchester clubs, and the visit of Tottenham Hotspur. Silva’s first few games looked comparatively easier, so for Everton to take just six points from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, AFC Bournemouth and Huddersfield is an ultimately disappointing beginning, albeit they remain unbeaten.

There are numerous mitigating factors, of course; first-half red cards at Molineux and the Vitality Stadium perhaps render both draws more credible. Couple this with a new manager trying to impose more progressive ideas on a squad increasingly hamstrung by injuries and some may argue it has been a respectable opening.

But, especially after the Toffees led late on in two of their three draws, and the uninspired performance against Huddersfield, there is an underlying sense of disappointment which will linger throughout the international break.

Though Martinez’s tenure was rife with managerial faux pas, he delivered Everton’s best points return in the Premier League, presiding over some of the most attractive football Evertonians have seen in recent times in 2013/14.

Yet this campaign also started underwhelmingly, and a 0-0 home draw to West Bromwich Albion in August 2013, in which the Blues dominated possession to no avail, particularly bore a striking resemblance to Saturday’s stalemate.

While Silva may draw inspiration from how Martinez eventually got Everton firing after a sluggish start, he must use the coming fortnight to address this side’s failings. An incapacity to defend set-pieces – just one of Everton’s six conceded goals this term came from open play – seems the logical place to begin.

It is an unfortunate circumstance that Everton now have two weeks to stew over easily their most dispiriting offering of the campaign. But in West Ham United, a club riddled with unrest after four defeats from four games, the Blues may have the ideal next opponent to show they have rectified early-season mistakes when the Hammers visit Goodison in two weeks’ time.

Nowhere more than at Everton do old habits die hard. If any positives can be taken from Saturday’s insipid showing, it is just how early Silva will have discovered this side’s deficiencies. It is his job now to correct them swiftly.

After an encouraging start to the season, this match leaves a bitter taste that will linger through the break

Before I get into anything, I want to make one thing clear.

I completely understand the factors working against Everton coming into Saturday’s match. Richarlison’s suspension plus Bernard’s injury left Theo Walcott as the lone true winger in the lineup, and he was playing his third game in a week.

Idrissa Gueye’s injury certainly didn’t help either, nor did the growing injury crisis in the center of defense.

But with all that said, if the Toffees legitimately have goals of reaching Europe, a home match against Huddersfield Town is simple one you’ve got to find a way to win — and Marco Silva’s side couldn’t do it. It’s far from a sky-is-falling moment, but it’s definitely a rough way to head into the international break.

With that said, let’s take a look at what went wrong at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Everton’s lineup, given the absences at hand, came with no real surprises.

| Here's how we're lining up against @htafcdotcom today!

4⃣ changes from our last #PL game.
1⃣ st #PL start for @KurtZouma and @LucasDigne.
Captain Coleman.
@tybrowning amongst the subs. #EFCmatchday pic.twitter.com/861uS37v3v
— Everton (@Everton) September 1, 2018

Dominic Calvert-Lewin at wing isn’t ideal, but he was clearly the best option available with Richarlison out and Ademola Lookman throwing a tantrum (or experiencing a groin injury, if you believe the club) over the last few weeks.

Tom Davies once again started in the center of midfield, this time in place of the injured Gueye. Morgan Schneiderlin’s return was certainly a welcome one, but he and Gana both play best when they have each other, and Davies just doesn’t quite hit Gana’s highs.

Everton was undone by two main factors in this match. I’m quite confident you’re well aware of one — set piece marking. Last week the story from Silva was that Schneiderlin plays an important role in their zonal marking scheme, and they’ve suffered without him in that regard.

This week, Schneiderlin was back, and yet...

Look, I’ll openly admit that when it comes to set piece marking, I’m far from an expert. That kind of defending comes with both physical and tactical considerations that are very difficult for me to hypothesize about while sitting on my laptop drinking iced tea.

But the numbers don’t lie. The Toffees have conceded six goals in the Premier League so far this season — four on set pieces, one penalty, and one from open play. If you told me before the start of the season, Everton conceded only one goal from set pieces before the international break, I’d have probably guessed the club had 9 or 10 points.

Instead, the Toffees are sitting on 6.

Can zonal marking work? Well, lots of people smarter than me and who have played a lot more football than me say they don’t like it. Yet, some managers insist upon doing it.

Who’s right? Frankly, I don’t give a damn. Silva needs to find a solution over the international break and get it running immediately.

The second Everton issue on Saturday was a lack of creativity and composure in the middle and final thirds. This issue presented itself differently in each half.

Huddersfield Town came out in a 5-4-1 with every intention of sitting deep and absorbing pressure. I doubt Silva or any Everton players were surprised by that, but you wouldn’t really know it from watching the match.

In the first half, Everton was content to possess in front of the midfield block of four, but didn’t frequently find enough possession between the lines. Take a look at the first-half passmap (EvertonFC.com).

When faced with deep-lying back five, the attackers generally have two options to try to break down the opponent. If you can catch the full-backs trying to sneak up the field to join the attack, the space vacated in behind is a good target from which to whip crosses in, if you can get the ball there.

That’s how Everton scored its lone goal — Lucas Digne caught the Huddersfield right-back napping for just a moment, snuck in behind, and delivered a gorgeous cross to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But because Huddersfield stayed pretty deep and Everton’s wingers were not-actually-a-winger Calvert-Lewin, clearly exhausted Theo Walcott, and prodigal son Ademola Lookman, that wasn’t really a consistent threat.

The other, and generally more reliable option against this kind of back five is to look to use your numerical advantage in the center of midfield. Everton had a 3-to-2 advantage in the center of the park, and two quality players in that bunch in Gylfi Sigurdsson and Morgan Schneiderlin.

And yet...we are faced with a passmap like the one you see above. Everton created zero danger by finding Gylfi between the defensive and midfield lines, which really should have been their bread and butter in this one.

Instead, the team was far too content to just knock the ball around the midfield in hopes that something good would happen. Of course, working the ball around the midfield to an extent is an important part of finding the lanes for a killer pass against a deep block, but as you can see, that pass just didn’t come anywhere near frequently enough, especially in the central channel.

At halftime, I can only assume that Marco Silva told the lads to try to play quicker, with more urgency, and more incisively. The Toffees...sorta tried to do that, I guess? But it came out in this form.

Everton went from only passing the ball around the middle third to trying far too frequently to force it forward when nothing was available, and the result was pretty unbearable. Combine this with the drop-off in quality from Walcott to Lookman, and the Toffees were nearly unwatchable in the second half.

I want to quickly double back to Sigurdsson before I close, because the struggles with getting him the ball are not unique to this week.

Take a look at his touches from this match (WhoScored.com).

31 touches for Sigurdsson isn’t enough — not to mention that’s not really where you’d hope to see him on the ball in the first place.

By comparison, Theo Walcott had 28 touches in just 55 minutes, and Calvert-Lewin had 45 touches in just 15 more minutes of play.

But the Toffees had the same issue against AFC Bournemouth too. Sigurdsson had 33 touches in that game — Richarlison had 24 touches and he got sent off in the first half!

We’re still a little too early in the season for me to posit exactly why this is happening, especially considering that Everton has spent 100 minutes down a man so far this season. But, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

Ultimately then, the attacking struggles were two-fold — and all connected. In the first half, Everton played too conservatively on the ball, lacking the creativity needed in the final third.

In the second half, the Toffees tried to up their tempo, but did so without any real plan on how to do so. The result was a lot of wayward forward passes into the attacking third, without any real sustained possession.

In reality, Marco Silva’s side needed to find a happy medium between those two extremes, but never could. The inability to get the ball to the club’s best playmaker, Gylfi Sigurdsson, surely played a role in those struggles.

Teething problems or should Blues be concerned?

While giving away a 2-0 lead at AFC Bournemouth last weekend was disappointing, the first real frustration of the season came on Saturday, as Everton were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield Town.

The Goodison Groans returned to L4 having taken a break since May, but was it just a bad day at the office for the Blues or are the cracks of Silva’s reign already starting to show?

Here I’ll take a look at five intriguing stats that should shed some light on where the Blues are at.

Another Corner Conceded

Blues have conceded from 18% of corners faced this season

Marco Silva this week defended his zonal set-up from corners, saying the goals conceded are merely teething problems that have been exasperated by the absence of Morgan Schneiderlin, who he says is key to the system.

However, Schneiderlin was back against Huddersfield and the Blues AGAIN conceded from a corner.

To give you an idea of how big a problem this is for the Toffees, here’s a summary of Everton’s goals conceded this season:

Wolves 1: Direct free-kick

Wolves 2: Header from cross

Saints 1: Conceded from corner

Bournemouth 1: Penalty

Bournemouth 2: Conceded from corner

Rotherham 1: Conceded from corner

Huddersfield: Conceded from corner

On the one hand, Everton have conceded just once from open play so far this term, showing that we’re pretty stable at the back… that is, unless we face a corner. We’ve faced 22 corners this term and conceded four times, meaning we’re conceding on over 18% of our corners.

If you look at it from a more extreme point of view, if Everton hadn’t conceded any goals from corners so far this season, they would be sitting pretty in the top four with three wins and a draw, rather than one win and three draws.

New Boys One of Few Positives

Assist for Digne, solid from Zouma

Richarlison aside, it’s been a slow introduction to Everton’s summer recruits.

But following an impressive performance against Rotherham in midweek, Lucas Digne kept his place for the visit of Huddersfield and was one of the Everton’s best performers, teeing up a tantalising cross for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to convert.

Kurt Zouma also made his first league start for the Blues here and put in a solid display, winning six headers and completing 89.6% of his passes

Goals Galore AGAIN(!)

Every game under Silva has seen both teams score

It’s five out of five for Silva… unfortunately in terms of wins, but both teams scoring in every competitive game under the Portuguese since he took charge of the Blues.

But as we previously discussed, Everton have conceded just once from open play this season, so if the Blues can figure out how to stop conceding from corners, we’ll hopefully discover a few clean sheets this term.

Conservative Blues

Everton too safe on the ball with 84% pass completion

On the face of it, completing 84% of your passes looks an impressive statistic. But as the old saying goes, “nothing ventured, nothing gained” – and too few boys in Blue were willing to risk losing the ball in order to break a stubborn Huddersfield side down.

Facing teams that would sit deep at Goodison Park was one of Roberto Martinez’s greatest problems, and hopefully Marco Silva won’t fall into the same traps.

Everton were slow on the ball and static off it, playing straight into Huddersfield’s hands.

The Blues AREN’T Unlucky

Again we score more goals than expected

This wasn’t one of those games were the Blues peppered Huddersfield but couldn’t break them down. It was a match were Huddersfield brought a simple game plan and Everton had no answers for it.

Other than a couple of red card decisions, Everton haven’t been unlucky this season. The Blues have had an expected goals return of just 3.9, but have managed to score 7 times nonetheless.

On Saturday, Everton again scored more than expected – although that was just once. The Blues were expected to score 0.6 based on the chances created, compared to Huddersfield’s 0.58 – the two lowest totals in the league this week.

A performance that left a lot to be desired from Marco Silva’s side yielded just a point against the Terriers

Everton failed to force victory over a stubborn Huddersfield Town in the most disheartening result of Marco Silva’s tenure so far. Here’s three points to take away from Goodison Park:

Tom Davies has an identity crisis

Saturday was Davies’ 74th appearance for his boyhood side, an extraordinary amount of game time for a 20-year-old who only made his first team debut in April 2016.

Yet it is easy to see why Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and now Marco Silva have placed their trust in him so frequently; his fearlessness, drive and high work rate make him one of the most likeable and trustworthy members of Everton’s squad.

Silva especially showed an incredible amount of faith in Davies by making him the club’s youngest-ever captain against Rotherham United in midweek. But more substandard performances like today and such confidence from his manager may begin to wane.

Tom Davies struggled to cope with Huddersfield’s powerful midfield

Davies looks, and plays, like a player caught between two stools; he burst onto the Goodison scene as a tough-tackling, box-to-box midfielder, but at times more recently it seems as if he can’t decide whether he is a more offensive or defensive-minded player.

It would be unfair to denigrate Davies given his tender age, his Evertonian heritage and his unrelenting willingness to help the team.

But all of this is not enough to excuse a performance littered with stray passes, and Davies looked a mismatch up against the particularly physical midfield of Huddersfield.

The sooner he works out what his game is, and sticks to it.. the better.

Seamus Coleman’s free pass

Of all the sacred cows in Everton’s squad - and there a fair few - Seamus Coleman undeniably gets the biggest free pass.

Similarly to Davies, some of the right-back’s shortcomings are perhaps overlooked by Evertonians because of his impeccable attitude, but the Irishman simply has not started the season well enough, at least from a defensive point of view. Offensively, his crossing has long been an issue and this season it has been brutal to watch when the Blues are on the move.

Is it the weight of captaincy that’s weighing heavily on his shoulders?

Seamus Coleman hasn’t started the season in the best of form

Competition for places breeds better players; Morgan Schneiderlin in midfield has looked rejuvenated in the knowledge that André Gomes’ arrival could threaten his place, as did Michael Keane at the back before his injury at Bournemouth following the signings of fellow centre-backs Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma.

Coleman, meanwhile, only really has youngster Jonjoe Kenny vying for his place, and such a dearth of alternatives can only be to his detriment. If there was one oversight in an otherwise positive summer transfer window for Everton, it was not strengthening in this area.

If recent Everton managers have one common failing, it’s playing players out of position. Silva has largely avoided repeating this mistake so far, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin, despite a well-taken header, does not belong where the manager placed him; on the wing.

Calvert-Lewin has also been shoehorned out wide by both Koeman and Allardyce but, as a natural striker, he instinctively looks to play closer to the Toffees’ number nine, rather than providing the width this team so patently needs.

His brace in midweek against Rotherham United and his goal today demonstrate how much the 21-year-old has to offer the Blues, but strikers should be played up front and not forced to deputise on the flank.

Overall, it was an incredibly frustrating day for Everton, but one which may teach Silva a lot about the limitations of the squad he inherited in the summer.

Manager’s comments after Toffees drop two points at home

Everton were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Huddersfield Town in a game strewn with errors and a general lack of creativity and urgency. The Blues have been struck by a spate of recent injuries and suspensions have further limited manager Marco Silva’s options.

Speaking after the game to evertontv, Silva said -

“It wasn’t the best game, it wasn’t the best performance. We performed really differently and better in previous games.

“Even in the first half after I saw how our opponent came here to play, we expected them to come here and put 9 or 10 players in the box. In that case we have to play faster, and not give them time to organize every time.

“In the second half we didn’t make good decisions, especially when attacking, we need to show more creativity.”

When asked if it was a sign of respect that sides like Huddersfield are coming here with such defensive intent, he agreed -

“Yes. “It’s normal [for an away team to show Everton respect]. They have seen how we are playing, and they came here to put everyone back in their box, just waiting for us to make a mistake. Of course you have to play in a different way to disorganize them.

“They showed big respect for our team but you have to be aware that can happen. You have to play faster to create chances.

“We controlled possession but in some moments it was too slow. In this type of game we have to put more creativity into our game and play faster offensively. And disorganise teams when they are sitting back and waiting for our mistake.

“It’s not the best thing to see, but it’s normal the way they came to play.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his third goal in four days and the manager was happy with the youngster.

“Yes it was important to him. It’s what I expect from our strikers. When they score it’s always significant. I hope and expect that the goals come soon for Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse as well.

“He has a different profile of player, he’s different. In the box he’s really strong when we’re attacking. He can score goals with his head, it’s a strength of his.

“We have three strikers with different profiles, this afternoon he showed he can play out on the left as well.”

Kurt Zouma had a very good game as centrehalf as well.

“Yes it’s something we expect from him. It’s important that he can give us this quality, and his stability is something we are trying to find.”

Blues looking for a good result before the international break

Live Blog

Fulltime Thoughts: Everton have been frustrating today, simply not incisive enough. It’s been an intense period, and the international break is a chance for Marco Silva to work on the zonal marking as well as getting sharper in the attacking half.

Richarlison was certainly missed today too, but the Blues should have enough quality to put away teams like this at Goodison Park. We go into the break now a little more concerned than we would have been with a win. Hopefully Walcott is alright, and we get a few players back to good health soon, it’s bare bones right now.

90’+5’: This will certainly feel like points dropped unfortunately. Frustrating.

88’: Niasse showing industry down the left, wins a late corner. Niasse sidefoots a volley from the Baines corner

86’: Now Morgan Schneiderlin is in the book too, grabbing Kachunga on a break.

75’: Shimmy from Lookman and then a low shot, inches away from Sigurdsson and DCL to score.

Silva makes the double sub, with Leighton Baines and Oumar Niasse now on for Digne and Sigurdsson.

73’: Hadergjonaj goes in the book for a shove on Holgate. I’m only typing this because I want to say that name again.. Hadergjonaj.

70’: Oh Seamus. His crossing just seems to be getting worse by the week, and it wasn’t great to begin with.

64’: Good application from Lookman there, helping Coleman back in defence. Gets a round of applause too.

63’: Tom Davies with a late sliding tackle, and he’s in the book too now.

56’: Ademola Lookman coming on for Walcott who is sitting down. He didn’t look right since he landed hard on his knee, was holding his hip.

54’: Holgate in the book now, deep in the Huddersfield half. Blatantly grabbing Mounie’s shirt to prevent a counter attack.

46’: We’re underway, and Tosun is fouled almost immediately. Nothing comes out of the freekick, straight to Lossl.

Halftime Thoughts: Blues will need to figure out how to unlock the Terriers defence, 9 attempts with only one on goal tells the tale. Aside from setpieces, Everton have been pretty comfortable defending, just need to be more incisive with the passing in the opposite half.

45’+2’: It’s 1-1 at the break. Blues controlled most of the half, but have found it hard to prise open the Huddersfield massed ranks in the back.

42’: The leveler certainly woke the Terriers, it’s been much more even since the two quick goals.

36’: It’s 1-1!! DCL with a fantastic flicked header from a Digne cross ties it up.

34’: Damned setpieces! DCL looks to be pushed in the back as he tries to head clear, ball goes off the top of his head and is headed in by Billing, no chance for Pickford. Huddersfield lead 1-0.

28’: Counter attack sees a shot from Tosun, but he puts it well over.

20’: Pickford comes out to punch a high cross successfully; he looks somewhat uncomfortable and is working that right shoulder.

18’: Cross comes in from the right and it’s well-high, and there’s uproar at Goodison as Cenk Tosun is bundled over. The striker is very unhappy and tells the ref exactly what he thinks.

16’: Coleman shot well wide. Nice turn at the edge of the box and has a shooting channel, but it’s clear of the far post. 64% possession for the Blues.

13’: Zouma! Took a seeing-eye shot from way out and it bobbled and weaved in the air before going past Lossl’s right post. Good attempt, goalie was beaten.

11’: Everton giving away the ball cheaply at times, but have looked creative in the opening few minutes.

4’: Billing goes in the book for a late challenge on Kurt Zouma.

1’: And we’re off! Blues in a 4-2-3-1, visitors Huddersfield are in a 5-4-1 formation.

The teams come out to Z-Cars.. there was footage of captain Seamus Coleman in the tunnel there in another zone, completely tuning out everything around him. Also saw Lookman walk by, looking pretty positive, high-fiving and fist-bumping every member of the starting XI.

Starting lineups: So Dominic Calvert-Lewin gets the start on the left wing, with Ademola Lookman on the bench. Lucas Digne is also in, with Leighton Baines on the bench. Tyias Browning is the only CB substitute the Blues have, after playing for the U-23s last night.

The international break is coming up after this weekend’s fixtures, and Marco Silva will be looking for maximum points today to sit comfortably four games into the season.

Everton host Huddersfield Town looking to keep their unbeaten run to start the season while the visitors have staggered out of the gates, getting hammered by Manchester City and Chelsea.

The Blues have some serious suspension and injury woes, but will still have Ademola Lookman in the ranks later today.
