Another look at Saturday's FA cup tilt against Bournemouth.

It wasn't always pretty to look at, but Everton have managed to keep their cup (and probably European football) hopes alive for another week. It'll still be an uphill slog to make something of the season, but it should be remarked that Everton have not advanced so far in both the League and FA Cup in the Premier League era. As frustrating as the season has been, that's something that shouldn't be overlooked.

All Joel Does Is Win

I'm not particularly a fan of Joel Robles. He's an adequate, mostly competent goalkeeper, but he's very unlikely to be able to steal you point a few times a year, the way the 36-year old Tim Howard is still capable of doing. At one point recently WhoScored listed both "Saving Long Shots" and "Saving Close Range Shots" amongst his weaknesses. What is becoming more and more undeniable though, is that Everton simply seems to play better with Joel between the sticks.

Robles has started 12 games for the senior team this season, and has won 10 of those games. Even throwing out the victories against lower tier competition, Everton has won five of seven with Robles in goal, including their only victory over a top five Premier League club. Howard has managed just six wins in 23 competitions this season.

So why has Everton been so much better with Robles? Its likely part to do with the lineup changes Martinez has made (Lennon's full time introduction has certainly done wonders for the defense from the wings), partly with improved coordination by extant starters and partially just plain old luck. But at least part of it must be due to Robles's control of the game from the back.

There's a certain amount of, for lack of a better term, emotional stability in Everton's play. Case in point is Robles's penalty kick save. It would have been oh so Everton to lose 1-0 to an inferior team on a boneheaded handball. We all felt that was where the situation was going as soon as the penalty was given. Joel's huge save (on an admittedly poor kick from Daniels) was the kind of emotional swing that Everton never seems to get in their favor. Joel's discipline and focus saved that shot and perhaps saved the game for Everton.

Ultimately it's a small sample set to go off of and Robles will certainly need to be challenged for this place, but for now he's the right man for the job,

Lukaku Still Scoring Goals, But Needs Better Service

Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net for the 21st time in all competitions against Bournemouth. He also frequently found himself visibly frustrated by the lack of accurate balls sent his way.

In general Everton was listless in the box for much of the match and Lukaku was a big part of that. It has to be recognized that his service has been somewhat lacking the last several weeks. Lukaku has only two goals in his last eight games in all competitions, one of which came on a penalty earned by Tom Cleverley. Rom had scored 12 goals and dished three assists in the prior 12 matches.

Lukaku probably misses the presence of Gerard Deulofeu. Deulofeu has played 70 minutes or more only twice during Lukaku's dip in productivity, amassing only 16 minutes total in the last five matches. Despite that number, Geri to Rom is the third most profitable assist-to-goal scorer in the Premier League, with the pair connecting on six goals.

Being a striker is often a feast or famine type business, but the Toffees will need to find a way to keep feeding their Belgian striker.

The Hardest Working Man In The Business

Its getting to the point that an excellent game from Gareth Barry is becoming a humdrum affair. Every once in a while its worth pointing out how good Barry has been this season. The former Man City put in another terrific 90 minutes, dominating the center midfield.

Barry was all over the place, contributing seven tackles, eight recoveries, four clearances, an interception and one beautiful assist. Overall Barry touched the ball 100 times on Saturday, with no other player on either side even coming close matching that feat.

We began the season by waiting for Barry to fall apart physically, but it just isn't happening. Barry is one of only eight outfield players to play every minute of the Premier League season and at 34, he's the oldest. Maybe he can play until he's 40. If he does, I hope its in Everton blue.

Everton and Roberto Martinez utilized a straightforward gameplan in their fifth-round FA Cup match, continuing a trend from the past few weeks. After frequently over-complicating things in the first two-thirds of the season, have the Toffees found their way with this lineup?

For much of this season, it has felt like Roberto Martinez has been trying to outsmart himself. Say what you will about the Everton manager, but he isn't stupid. Stubborn? Most certainly. But stupid? He would not have been able to reach this stage if he simply wasn't that bright.

That has made it even more frustrating to watch Martinez over-complicate things with a team that has enough talent to play a simple game. This year alone, we've seen Martinez try to utilize a striker at left wing, instruct left wingers to play entirely too centrally, force Ross Barkley into wide areas as a result, not utilize his attacking full-backs to their full potential, and create entirely too predictable attacks, all while managing to still have an underachieving defense.

It may seem counter-intuitive then, that Everton's arguably best stretch of the season has come with a central midfielder at left midfield and the team's top assist-getter on the bench. Though it seems, at least at first glance, like these choices would continue to over-complicate things, Martinez has in fact stumbled upon a combination of players that is greater than the sum of its parts.

After months of lineups where the opposite seemed to be true, the Spaniard has been wise to stick with the lineup he used in Everton's match on Saturday.

Aaron Lennon and Tom Cleverley continued their runs on the wings, with Bryan Oviedo still preferred to Leighton Baines at left-back. The heart of the team remains Gareth Barry and James McCarthy, who are playing in front of Ramiro Funes Mori and Phil Jagielka.

The key to Martinez's new setup has been balance in both attack and defense, which often lacked early in the season. This balance played a huge role in Everton's success against Bournemouth on Saturday.

This balance starts in the attack, with the Toffees working attacking moves through all three channels. On Saturday, Everton's attack, in lateral terms, was incredibly even. 36.8 percent of the team's time in the attacking third was spent in the left channel, 37 percent was in the right channel, and 26.2 percent was in the central channel.

This means that both of Everton's wide midfielders got on the ball in wide, dangerous areas, as the heatmap of Tom Cleverley and Aaron Lennon shows (courtesy of EvertonFC.com).

Both players occasionally checked into central positions, but largely kept the team's width. With the wide players actually staying wide, the team's holding midfielders had varied options to pass to when the team recovered the ball in the defensive and middle thirds of the pitch.

As you can see, McCarthy and Barry sprayed the ball out to each wing pretty evenly, keeping Bournemouth's defense honest.

Lennon and Cleverley provide balance in more than just this way.

In Seamus Coleman, Bryan Oviedo, and Leighton Baines, Everton has some of the most dangerous attacking full-backs in English football, yet wingers like Arouna Kone and Gerard Deulofeu have often marginalized these players.

Both Cleverley and Lennon do a great job of including the full-backs in the attack, in two important ways.

First, both players are defensively responsible. For the full-backs to get into the attack fully, they need to know that they're going to have defensive cover if the ball turns over.

Lennon and Cleverley are, without a doubt, the team's two most defensively responsible wide players. Their heatmap above shows how frequently they are in their own defensive third, providing cover.

Second, both players have a strong sense of when to drift into the center of the pitch. Arouna Kone and Kevin Mirallas have been guilty of wandering into the center from the left too frequently, isolating the left-back, while Gerard Deulofeu often adopts such a wide starting position that he gives the full-back no space to run into.

Lennon and Cleverley both have strong tactical awareness, understanding when to move closer to the center, both to get onto the ball themselves and to clear space for the full-backs.

The result of all of this is a heatmap and passing map for the full-backs like we see below.

Bryan Oviedo and Seamus Coleman regularly got into the attack and managed to create four chances. It is worth saying the the execution from these players (and a lot of Everton players, in fairness) was less than stellar. The Toffees in general were not at their sharpest in the middle and final thirds, but it was not because players were not in positions to succeed.

The upshot of tactically sensible play in the wide positions is often open space in the center of the field, where a team's No.10 can get onto the ball and make plays.

It is no surprise then, that Ross Barkley's best stretch of the season has come along with these changes to the lineup. With wide players attracting defenders and making smart passes, you end up with a Barkley heatmap like the following.

Barkley is all over the middle and attacking thirds, exploiting space across the pitch as it is opened up by the intelligent movement of Everton's wide players.

In all, it feels a little silly to say that Everton's success has come, at least in part, as a result of playing in a relatively unremarkable fashion. But, I think there is definitely something to this line of thinking.

Everton has talented attacking players and competent defenders. The players on this team are now talented enough that they don't need a particularly astounding gameplan; they just need to be put in a position to make plays.

By including Cleverley and Lennon in the lineup, focusing on fixing the team's defense, and allowing his players to simply make plays, Roberto Martinez has given the Toffees their best chance to win.

Of course, there will be times that Everton needs a more intricate gameplan. In the loss to West Brom, the Toffees needed a way to break down a compact defense after conceding an early goal, and Martinez failed to come up with it. Against top teams, Everton may need to make changes as well.

But, in most situations at this stage, the Toffees have enough talent to play a simple game and earn positive results. With this lineup, Roberto Martinez has found balance and propelled his team toward success.

Manager's post-match comments after Everton beat Bournemouth

Everton were lucky at times yesterday in their FA Cup Fifth Round game against AFC Bournemouth. But they took their opportunities when presented to leave Dean Court with a 2-0 victory, and a spot in the Sixth Round. The draw for the quarter finals will be held today at the conclusion of the Manchester City - Chelsea game, with the Toffees being ball number 8 in the draw.

After the game, manager Roberto Martinez talked about finishing the season in a strong way -

"Another clean sheet keeps the consistency from our last four performances.

"We look a really strong team now going into the final part of the season and I am really proud of going into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

"We will take it step by step. It was important that we showed we can adapt to this game and now we want to get a really good period in the league.

"The only thing that has been missing has been wins at home and we are looking to change that."

He also had plaudits for the hero of the day, goalie Joel Robles who looks to have usurped the starting role from veteran Tim Howard -

"The penalty arrived in an isolated situation where we didn't deal with a corner and the penalty was right full awarded.

"That was where we saw a very special performance from Joel Robles. He magnificent in the way he controlled the moment and the way he enjoyed being the goalkeeper for Everton.

"He has been working behind the scenes for a long, long time and it was pleasing to see that performance.

"I have to highlight the role Tim Howard has had in that. Since he has picked up his injury he has had an incredible influence on Joel to allow him to be relaxed, to allow him to be calm and that showed today."

Blues solid but unspectacular in win

A very circumspect looking Everton rode their luck to win 2-0 earlier today at Bournemouth in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Goals from key men Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku did the job on one end, while Joel Robles saved a penalty on the other to seal the win. The penalty conceded just minutes before halftime was awarded after a James McCarthy handball, and the Irishman was lucky to not be sent off after having been awarded a yellow earlier for a lunging foul.

The Blues came out a more determined side in the second half and got the breakthrough in the 55th minute when a Ross Barkley shot from outside the box was deflected and the trajectory carried the ball high and over the Bournemouth goalie Adam Federici. Ironically, it was former Everton man Dan Gosling that was responsible for the last touch. Toffees everywhere will always remember the midfielder for the late, late winner against Liverpool also in the FA Cup.

Just minutes later Lukaku had the ball past Federici and in the goal, but was called offside by the tightest of margins. However, he was not going to be denied, scoring with fifteen minutes to go to seal the tie. A lovely flick-on from Gareth Barry from a corner found Lukaku in acres of space and he rammed home for his 21st goal in all competitions.

A goal apiece to Lukaku and Barkley plus a nice day from Robles in goal helps the Toffees continue their run of form.

It was not always pretty, but Everton put together a nice second half to defeat Bournemouth 2-0 on Saturday afternoon and move onto the quarter-final of the FA Cup.

The first 45 minutes of the game were not too encouraging for the Toffees. They maintained most of the possession but failed to create much of anything in the Cherries penalty area. On the other hand, Bournemouth did force an Everton mistake in the 37th minute.

Off of a corner, Everton midfielder James McCarthy brought a jump ball down with his arm. Without hesitation, referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot, awarding a Bournemouth penalty kick. There could be no argument. It was a lapse in judgement from McCarthy and a clear PK. Luckily for the Irishman, goalkeeper Joel Robles was on his game, guessing the right way and pushing away the Charlie Daniels attempt.

For Everton, the only real chance came from Romelu Lukaku in the 29th minute. He flat out burned his defender and worked his way into the box, getting a shot off. But Bournemouth keeper Adam Federici was equal to it and knocked it away with his right foot. It was 0-0 going into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Everton looked to be much more in charge, getting numerous good opportunities and using a bit of creativity to get quality chances.

Ross Barkley broke through the deadlock in the 55th minute. He took a shot from just outside of the Bournemouth box. It was immediately deflected by the toe of his defender Dan Gosling, but it caused the ball to move in such a way that confused Federici. The shot flew up and over the goalkeeper, putting the Toffees up 1-0.

Over the next 20 minutes or so, the boys in blue (well, white and black today) started to look a bit tired. It was the same lineup that Roberto Martinez has used four straight games os maybe they are starting to feel it. However, they powered through and put together two more real good chances.

Aaron Lennon laid a perfect pass to Barkley. It seemed like he would surely score to put the game away, but the shot was deflected when it was on its way goalwards. But that led to the second chance. Off of the ensuing corner kick, Gareth Barry flicked the ball into the box where Lukaku was waiting to smash it into the back of the net and seal the Everton victory.

Of course, there will be things we can complain about. The squad did not look as sharp as it has in recent weeks. Early on both Lukaku and Barkley were sort of invisible. McCarthy's play was uninspiring. And overall it was just boring stuff in the first hald. But they really picked it up in the second half and the defense put together another impressive performance. Over the last five games they have allowed just one goal, while scoring 11 times. And we got a chance to see Oumar Niasse on the field. He made his debut in the 80th minute. There wasn't much to go on. He was running around the pitch like a mad man for his 10 minutes or so, but I'm sure it's because he is eager to impress.

Something that I wonder about is the mental toughness of guys like John Stones and Gerard Deulofeu. They are talented young players who have not gotten much game time in recent weeks. Can they keep their cool with the team playing so well in their absence from games? Perhaps I am over-thinking it.

This will be the last time we see the club for a while. Next Sunday's Merseyside Derby has been postponed. So, the Toffees are off until March 1st when they travel to bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa. In the meantime, the team will head to Qatar for some warm-weather training.

The drawing for the next round of the FA Cup will occur tomorrow following the Tottenham/Crystal Palace match.

The Toffees are on the road against a Premier League side as they look to continue on in the FA Cup. Come talk about it with us!

Things only get tougher for Everton in the FA Cup. After cruising through the third and fourth rounds against lower league opposition, they drew a roadtrip to Premier League side Bournemouth.

It was this same matchup that led to one of the more exciting matches of the season thus far back in November. The Cherries tied things up two different times in the span of 10 minutes. A late Ross Barkley goal had Toffee supporters streaming onto the ground, but Junior Stanislas had different ideas, making sure it ended up a 3-3 finish.

That was just a normal league game. This time it is for a spot in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, a competition that Everton really needs to win if they still want European football next season.

Everton at Bournemouth: Pre Match Quotes ahead of today's FA Cup Fifth Round tie

Roberto Martinez has noted that in a time when many Premier League clubs are fielding weakened sides in the Cup competitions, Everton will continue to put out the best team they have.

"It's a competition that we want to approach in the manner that we all expect - when you are Everton every time you are on the pitch you have to reach certain standards and you want to win the football game.
"We are in the fifth round and we are going to give everything we've got to be in the draw for the next round.
"The quarter-final of this competition gets you very, very close to getting to Wembley, so everyone knows how important that is and we don't take any game lightly.
"The FA Cup is a competition we respect. I think we showed in the League Cup campaign that we're a team that can wish to be successful but it's still the fifth round and there's still a long, long way to go to talk about the competition in terms of winning it or not. It's just about giving everything we've got to be in the next round."

When asked if Joel Robles is now the Everton starting goalie -

"He is.
"It's been a really good, consistent period for him and the back four. I think defensively, you look at the performance against West Brom and it's exactly what we expected. We only conceded one corner, one shot on target, and unfortunately that went in.
"To have three clean sheets before that is something we can build on and carry on on those lines.
"That's when you are in a strong position, when you've got football making the decisions. It's important that you give continuity and at the moment, Joel is doing really well.
"But Tim Howard has been injured and he hasn't been able to fight for his place back. We'll benefit from the competition for places and that's the way I want to see it."

He refused though to comment on the speculation that Tim Howard would be leaving and Everton were interested in signing Asmir Begovic -

"Tim Howard has brought so much to the Premier League. It isn't normal for a foreign player to get so attached to a football club, especially in the modern game. He is now in his 10th season with us and he's made an incredible contribution. All we're focused on is getting Tim back to his best level and making sure he is able to finish the season strongly.
"There is nothing to comment on [with Begovic]. We're two thirds of the way through the season and there's no point in us speaking about other players. The window is closed, the squad is focused and ready for the final part of the league season and the fifth round of the FA Cup, so there is nothing to say about any rumours."

Martinez also spoke about Kevin Mirallas' season so far -

"We've got a very competitive squad and it's going to be difficult for certain players when they're not playing. What is important for Kevin is the way he has tried to earn a place in the starting line-up with his attitude and work-rate in training.

"The disappointment is shared by everyone. He was fantastic against Chelsea, then he started the next game against Swansea but picked up an injury which meant he wasn't available for the next game, and then he came on against Stoke. It's been that sort of stop-start season for him so far and we all hope he can have a consistent period in the side going forward."

Will manager tinker with the lineup after last weekend?

Defender John Stones is fully fit again after overcoming his hamstring issues, and will be in the gameday squad. Whether he breaks into the starting lineup will be a different question altogether. Before his injury-enforced absence, Stones had undergone a torrid run of games where he had been plagued by rash mistakes and the break was well-deserved for the young lad. In the meantime, the central defence pairing of Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori have done well, conceding just once in the last four games.

Everton's newest player, £13.5million signing Oumar Niasse, underwent minor surgery this week for a wrist ailment he has been carrying since his time in Russia, and could make the squad but is unlikely. The player, who became a father this week, is yet to make his Toffees debut.

Joel Robles has been rewarded for his consistency and will keep his starting spot between the sticks. Manager Roberto Martinez would not comment if this was the end for veteran Tim Howard, only saying that he was looking forward to Howard returning to full fitness and finishing off the season strongly.

Fan favourite Muhamed Besic will unfortunately miss out once again, after not having recovered fully from his hamstring injury. Defenders Tyias Browning and Tony Hibbert continue to be out with long-term issues.
