Blues unfortunate to get an all-Premier League clash this early in the tournament

Everton will travel to Crystal Palace in the first weekend of January for their FA Cup Third Round clash. The Blues’ game at Selhurst Park will be played on the weekend of Saturday 6th January, with television considerations determining the kickoff time and day. The Blues are away at Wolves the previous Saturday, and will be home against Aston Villa the following weekend.

If there’s a certain amount of deja vu for this fixture then it’s because the Toffees had gone to Palace in the Quarter Final of this very tournament two seasons ago, with Frank Lampard’s side dismantled 4-0 in March 2022.

Since then though the Blues have enjoyed a purple patch against the Eagles, including that memorable penultimate game of that season that Everton came back from behind in the second half to win 3-2 and secure survival. They again beat Palace 3-0 early last season before everything unraveled under Lampard. Since Sean Dyche took over the Blues fought to scoreless draw away last season, before making the Eagles one of their scalps this season as the Blues have made it three away wins in a row.

The full draw threw up a number of interesting clashes, including Arsenal taking on Liverpool and a big Northeast rivalry game with Newcastle playing Sunderland.

Ramsgate, from the Isthmian League South East Division, are the lowest-ranked team still left in the competition, and will be hosting Championship high-flyers Ipswich if they can beat AFC Wimbledon in their second-round tie on Monday. Maidstone, in the National League South, will have a home game against either Stevenage or Port Vale.
