Rafa Benitez was still short Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Andre Gomes and Seamus Coleman all due to injuries, with Alex Iwobi also missing out but Jean-Philippe Gbamin back.

The Blues lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation with Andros Townsend and Anthony Gordon as the wide midfielders, and Demarai Gray and Salomon Rondon in front.

The Red Devils had taken the lead through Anthony Martial just before the break, but Andros Townsend finished off a sweeping counterattack with flourish to level things. The Blues even had a chance to win the game late on but Yerry Mina was offside as he scored from a pass from Tom Davies at a corner.
