Everton went into the transfer deadline day without any real pressing needs and managed to finish the evening with a couple more big wages off the overall bill. With what little activity that did end up transpiring pretty well spaced out, the live blog was actually not a frantic timeline like we have seen in summers past.
Th signing of young central defender Ben Godfrey from Norwich City was all but confirmed with the player undergoing a medical over the weekend, with just the matter of the club unveiling the player left to do. That ended up happening early yesterday with the Blues announcing it first thing in the morning.
The 22-year-old is very highly regarded and the more we dug into the player the more we enjoyed what we were seeing regarding the player’s strength, versatility and overall ability. Of all the young centrehalves the Blues were being linked with, it does appear we’ve come away with the best one of the lot who can continue to grow under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti.
We had a couple of guests over on the School of Science podcast who are familiar with Godfrey from his time at Shrewsbury and Norwich, the latest episode is a must listen check it out.
With that out of the way, the focus appeared to change towards goalkeepers, with the Blues linked again with Sergio Romero of Manchester United, and then Claudio Gazzaniga of Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Blues appeared interested in loan deals only for either of the Argentines and nothing came of it.
At this point of the day news came out that veteran forward Theo Walcott was headed to the coast for a reunion with Southampton where he played before joining Arsenal. The player passed his medical over the afternoon and the signing announced just before the close of the window.
There were some rumours that AS Roma were interested in signing Bernard but nothing appeared to come of that, just like the talk that Glasgow Rangers were looking at Muhamed Besic with no success.
We heard Yannick Bolasie’s name for the first time in the afternoon too, with interest in the player from a couple of unnamed Turkish teams, but again, nothing materialized.
Later in the afternoon though, we first heard about Everton looking at Roma’s backup goalie Robin Olsen, with all parties reporting saying that the move was a go, with the announcement finally coming after the close of play.
Interestingly, after the close of the window came more news of an outgoing transfer, with Sandro Ramirez finally put out of his Merseyside misery by being sold to newly-promoted Spanish side SD Huesca.
Nothing else was announced after that, but don’t forget, the Premier League clubs can continue to complete deals domestically with EFL clubs until 5pm on October 16th, so you can expect Bolasie, Besic, Lossl and any number of the Under-23s to also move out in the next fortnight or so.
