Fulltime thoughts - Complete no-show from the Blues in the second half. Just poor.

Final stats
WhoScored

90+3’ - Another Derby embarrassment for the ages. So many of those in recent times. Everton lose 1-0.

87’ - Everton completely disjointed since the changes, with the players looking lost.

79’ - Bernard is now on for the Blues, Walcott goes off.

72’ - There it is. Everton were always going to pay for their wasted chances and poor play in the second half. Curtis Jones with a wondergoal that goes in off the underside of the crossbar, no chance for Pickford. Liverpool lead 1-0.

70’ - Origi fires off a snapshot from distance, tricky bounce just in front of Pickford and the goalie palms it away.

62’ - Blues have been atrocious in the second half and now we have a double change. Fabian Delph and Moise Kean on for Sigurdsson and Coleman.

61’ - Elliott again, wins a corner off Digne. Low ball, cleared, that’s the Reds tenth corner of the game to Everton’s four.

57’ - Digne now booked as Elliott zips by him again. Another freekick, Mina clears for a corner. Corner headed away by Mina.

56’ - Everton break out of the press and create a chance, but Richarlison dawdles on the ball and it’s a corner. Mina gets to it but can’t make solid contact, cleared.

53’ - Richarlison concedes a freekick from a dangerous position, ball into the box is cleared for a corner by DCL. Coleman gets out of the box with the ball but is penned against the sideline to win a throw.

52’ - Liverpool controlling play now as the Blues look exhausted. The hosts are swarming to the ball with intent.

49’ - Digne beaten by Elliott and concedes a freekick, taken short and the threat is eliminated.

46’ - Blues get it underway and win an early corner. Sidibe lays it off outside the box for Schneiderlin to shoot, but it’s just over.

Halftime Thoughts - The Blues have had their chances and shot straight at Adrian, disappointing. The direct long ball method is working well, just need to convert. Also Sidibe has been awful, time to bring on Bernard and push Walcott to the right.

45’ - Two minutes added on. The Blues have another chance but Richarlison waits too long and the Reds rush back and the shot is blocked.

43’ - Digne beaten by Minamino, Holgate blocks for a corner. Coleman blocks the corner for another corner, which is cleared.

41’ - Origi twists and turns in the Everton box and then fires off a shot which Pickford saves very very well, pushes it past the far post for a corner.
Low corner blocked and Everton break, but Sidibe loses the ball. He’s been awful today.

37’ - Everton win a corner from a Lallana block. High and goes out for another corner. Sigurdsson takes from the left, Adrian makes a complete hash of it beaten by Mina in the air but he flicks it just wide.
Now DCL shoots just wide when set up outside the box.

34’ - Origi proving a handful for both Coleman and Sidibe, and neither can prevent him putting in a fantastic cross into the box, no Reds can make contact and the Blues survive.

31’ - Schneiderlin sets Walcott free down the right, his quick cross into the box is just inches away from the diving head of DCL.

29’ - The movement of Minamino and Lallana is causing the backline problems, with the latter getting another shot but it’s well wide.

27’ - Oh Richarlison! Walcott with a great low cross in and the Brazilian has a shot, but once again straight at Adrian who saves.

25’ - Richarlison slides in and prevents a pass to Minamino, goes out for a corner. Low ball in, cleared well, but a shot from distance goes wide.

17’ - Both sides trading long balls trying to get through and behind the defence.

12’ - Everton move the ball quickly and DCL wins a freekick from a promising position. Sigurdsson swings it in to the completely unmarked Holgate and he heads it straight at the goalie! Oh my word.

7’ - Hosts win a corner from a deep cross, with Digne heading it out. James Milner is sitting down, looks like his day is done here.
Low corner into the box, cleared.

6’ - Chances! Sigurdsson finds Walcott in behind the backline, he can’t control and Dominic Calvert-Lewin shoots straight at Adrian, rebound falls to Djibril Sidibe and his shot was blocked.

4’ - Everton fluid with their formation, sometimes three and sometimes four in the back as Seamus Coleman slots in next to Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate depending on whether the Blues have the ball or not.

1’ - Reds get us started, both sides running hard early on.

Lineups - Ancelotti has gone with what might be his best eleven that are fully fit, but now have a midfield comprising Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Reds will be sending out a younger XI (three teenagers in the side), while giving a debut to new signing Minamino.

Preview

With Everton already out of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup represents the last chance of a shot at a trophy this season. However, that road to Wembley leads through the Blues’ house of horrors, aka the giant hole punch at Anfield.

Carlo Ancelotti has brought some semblance of order and organization in his short time with the Blues, but that will be challenged today against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who have been in world-beating form in 2019.

As the last game in a busy holiday schedule, there could be some rotation in the squads but for Ancelotti, the importance of this game will mean he once again trots out the same players that have been playing all December.

Last Meeting

The Blues last trip to Anfield probably put the seal on Marco Silva’s tenure at Everton, with his aggressive strategy leaving his side wide open for Liverpool to exploit with diagonal raking balls behind the backline. Not that the Everton players helped their own cause making silly mistake after silly mistake throughout the game as Liverpool thrashed them 5-2 in the Premier League.
