Pretty much from January onwards the writing was on the wall that Everton’s destroyer-in-chief Idrissa Gueye would be leaving the club.
When the Toffees repelled French giants Paris St Germain’s multiple bids, there was a feeling that they would be back and it wouldn’t be fair for us to hold back the player who had given the royal blue shirt the utmost effort and respect that it deserved.
And so it came to pass when early this morning Everton announced that his departure was confirmed. None of us were surprised, and no matter how much we knew this day was coming, none of us were ready either.

Thank you for always giving everything, Gana. pic.twitter.com/YvOTVAqm6Z
There are not enough words to fully describe how important a player Gana has been for Everton over the past three seasons. Patrolling the middle of the park, Gueye’s tackles, interceptions and sheer determination were the lifeblood of the Blues and it’ll be difficult to imagine an Everton lineup without him.
Despite having his ‘dream move’ turned down in January, Gueye continued to be the utmost professional he has always been. In fact, it appeared he turned it up a notch or two after the January transfer window closed, playing out of his mind as if to prove a point or two.
Gana’s farewell message to Evertonians reflects that professionalism and class. Posted on Twitter and Instagram, he said -
To The Blues,
Thank YOU! Since my arrival I have felt at home at this club, you have welcomed me and my family with open arms. Everton FC gave me the opportunity to continue in the premier league and the last 3 years I have had some amazing experiences which I will cherish forever. I am grateful to have had the love and support of you all throughout this journey and I must say no matter the weather or permformances the support was always there.
As you know I am about to start a new journey, a journey that I have dreamed about since a kid and when this opportunity presented itself I couldn’t turn it down. To my teammates and coaches I will miss you and will continue to support you. Everton ... we are family and will continue to be and for me Merseyside will always be BLUE #COYB.
Love, Idrissa Gana Gueye
A true Blue him, right until the end. Good luck Gana.
