There are few clashes at international level that are worthy of the derby label, but Brazil versus Argentina is certainly one of those. Rare is the football fan who is equally ambivalent to these two teams, who have played out some scintillating and some shocking battles in the past.
Despite the stars that line up in present days for the two teams, the rivalry has certainly lost some lustre with the emergence of the other South American sides. However, tonight it’s all on the line again.
The Seleção are playing at home and will be keen to avoid a repeat of their 7-1 semi-final humiliation (at this very stadium) of World Cup 2014 which they also hosted. Nothing will please La Selección more than humbling their bitter rivals on their own turf, but there’s also the matter of the clock ticking down on Lionel Messi’s career and opportunities to win national team glory will be few and far between.
Per the Daily Mail, Everton forward Richarlison has been cleared by the team medical professionals to rejoin the squad who have all been vaccinated now. We’ll know in a couple of hours if he will regain his spot in the squad, or if he’s suffering from fatigue, which is one of the most common symptoms of the mumps.
