Fulltime - Everton never really looked like equalizing today once the Magpies had gone ahead, roared on by their home support. They truly found another couple of gears while the Blues tried to park the bus. Poor substitutions from Silva doomed the Toffees in the end.
Everton remain as inconsistent as ever.

Fulltime stats - Everton at Newcastle
Premier League

90’ - Everton haven’t looked remotely close to getting an equalizer. They have been as bad in the second half as they were good in the first.
There will be a minimum of five minutes added on.

85’ - Shades of the Milwall game here, as Everton are second to every ball into the box. Perez finds a rebound, wide open, sidefoots home and the fans are screaming their side on. The Blues have completely disintegrated here. Bringing an added central defender on late almost always does this. Terrible terrible terrible.

83’ - Ademola Lookman is on now, as Newcastle continue to push for the winner.
Dummett with a great shot off a corner, and a flying save from Pickford. The corner is cleared, rebound back in and Everton now down 2-3!!

82’ - Oh boy, that was coming too. It’s now 2-2. Almiron’s shot from distance is too hot for Pickford to handle cleanly, rebound falls to Perez wide open and he slots home easily. Just onside too.

80’ - With Richarlison off, Sigurdsson is running into the gaps on the right. Mina has slotted into the now five-man backline.

75’ - Blues’ first substitution is Richarlison going off for Yerry Mina making a return from a foot injury. Looks like Marco Silva is looking to bunker down.

70’ - Now Schar wins his tenth yellow of the season for petulantly slamming the ball into the ground. Everton finally making an attacking move, holding the ball in the opposing half.
DCL squirms away at the top of the box, but his snapshot is very narrowly wide.

67’ - DCL now getting into it as well, solid shoulder-check levels Lejeune, nothing from Mason but a foul.
Everton getting flustered now, as Bernard and Digne combine to hash a corner clearance that ends with a Dummett header going just over. Focus boys.

65’ - 2-1 now. Rondon and Perez with some excellent passing between the two, ends with a terrific volley from Rondon that is deflected off Kenny sliding in, and beats Pickford.

63’ - Now Digne is clattered, looks very unhappy and Mason gives the home side a corner.

60’ - A dangerous corner from Sigurdsson right in the six yard box, Keane and Dummett go for it but Newcastle clear.
DeAndre Yedlin hacks Bernard down - the fullback has been embarrassed more than once by the wily little Brazilian. In keeping with his inconsistency, Mason does not give out a card.

57’ - Another horrendous error from Pickford goes unpunished! Long ball into the box, he hesitates and then decides to go for it, and Rondon is there first and chips it over the advancing keeper, but it rolls just wide. Oh man.
The home crowd are really residing rent-free in Pickford’s head now. He needs to just breathe and calm the eff down.

53’ - Good long pass beats Kenny and he takes his man down, goes in the book deservedly. Newcastle are focusing all their attacks down the right.

51’ - Almiron looks a threat every time he gets the ball. Getting away from Gueye and Gomes more often than not so far.

48’ - Second half is more of the same. Gueye hacked down by Newcastle, and the hosts pushing forward desperately.

Halftime Thoughts - Ruthless from the Blues today, love it, where has this side been all season?! We’ve looked sharp all half, good vision, and precise finishing. Certainly still not rock-solid at the back, but somehow still have a clean sheet. The Magpies 5-4-1 is winning the width battle, expect the aerial assault to continue.

Halftime Stats - Everton at Newcastle
Premier League

45+2” - Scherr with an awful challenge on Digne who makes a very good defensive header from an Almiron cross. The leftback crashes into Zouma and now both men are down. That was disgraceful from the Newcastle centrehalf, probably worse than the Lascelles foul.
It’s 2-0 to the Blues at halftime and Lee Mason has lost control of this game.

42’ - Jamaal Lascelles goes in the book for clattering into Richarlison off the ball. The home crowd is officially incensed now.
Sigurdsson goes down in the box, minimal contact there. Referee right to wave play on.

40’ - The home crowd are losing their minds right now, especially when Kenny goes sliding in fairly to win the ball and Sigurdsson is fouled just outside the box.
The Icelander’s freekick is gathered easily by Dubravka in goal who starts off a quick counter and Perez gets a good look at the goal, but Pickford saves very well.

32’ - GUESS WHAT!! Everton go right up the other end and score!!

30’ - Oh what a horrendous mistake by Jordan Pickford. Drops a high cross into the box, ball falls right at the feet of Salomon Rondon, but before he can tap it in the goalie wipes him out with a rugby tackle!
Lee Mason has no doubts, points at the spot.. penalty. Clear that, lucky to even stay on the pitch.
Guess what, ‘Nickford’ redeems himself!!! Matt Ritchie’s shot is kicked away by Pickford!

28’ - Lee Mason is not making any friends today, both managers and sets of supporters are a little aggravated by what he’s letting slide.

25’ - Almiron is looking good today, zips away past Gomes but cuts into the middle and that is his mistake as Zouma stops him like a brick wall. The crowd is incensed, but the defender had both feet firmly on the ground, no studs showing and the referee was right to let play go on.

17’ - GOAL!! Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the delicate glancing header and the Blues lead!
Bernard has been in sparkling form recently and has shown a great touch today already even before the goal. His excellent no-look pass sprung Digne open, and his cross is delicately placed in the far corner by DCL - superb football all around.

13’ - Whew! Pickford with an awkward punch out from a deflected cross, goes straight at Ayoze Perez and his instinctive header back is narrowly wide.
That brought back memories of when Tom Cleverley won the game in time added on right here at St James Park a couple of seasons ago.

12’ - Lucas Digne and Bernard combine beautifully on the left, but Sigurdsson’s shot is blocked.

6’ - Kenny with a poor giveaway in the opposing half allows Miguel Almiron to run into the box but his centre sails through the box harmlessly. Whew.
Richarlison and Bernard have swapped wings, with Richie on the right since the beginning of the game.

3’ - Jordan Pickford’s first touch is booed - this will continue all game long, thanks to his Sunderland past.

1’ - Good start for the Blues. Richarlison goes down in the box chasing a loose ball and then captain-for-the-day Gylfi Sigurdsson sees his tame shot saved.

Update - Whoa! Appears Seamus Coleman got sick in the warmups, and now Jonjoe Kenny is in, with Tom Davies added to the subs.

Starting lineups - Marco Silva doesn’t go overboard with the changes, drops Theo Walcott for Bernard to switch over to the right, Richarlison on the left and Andre Gomes returns too.

Everton have nine games to play, with five of those coming against sides in the top half of the table. Today however is not one of them, but could be as difficult as those clashes.

The Blues are at St James Park to take on Newcastle who have looked very good at home in recent weeks, and will provide a stern test to Marco Silva and his boys as they look to finish out the season strong following a good away win at Cardiff City and the home draw against Liverpool last weekend in the Merseyside Derby.

The Magpies have little to play for but for pride, and their supporters will take great relish in booing former Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford as he lines up between the sticks for the Toffees today.

The Toffees have won their last two trips to Tyneside with 1-0 margins, what will today bring?

Last Meeting

Everton controlled the game at Goodison Park but watched Newcastle hit them on the counter and take an early lead. It took a scrappy goal from Richarlison to tie it up but the Blues spurned a number of chances to win the game, and then had to have Pickford keep out former on-loan Everton winger Christian Atsu twice in the closing stages to preserve the draw.
