It was puzzling why Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was even called up for Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations after he missed the Blues’ last Premier League game against Huddersfield Town with a knee injury he picked up a week earlier against AFC Bournemouth.

However, most national teams insist on conducting their own medical checkups on injured players to ensure there’s no shady business going on. It appears that the Senegalese medical staff have looked at Gana and deemed that he is unfit to participate during this international break, as reported by La Vie Senegalaise (via Sport Witness).

Senegal play Madagascar on September 9th in their only game of this period, so it made the most sense to allow the player to return to Finch Farm for his recovery.

The Blues host West Ham United on Sunday 16th before traveling away to Arsenal the following Saturday, and manager Marco Silva will be desperately hoping to have a full complement of players by then.
