Everton kick off their 2018-19 season with a difficult away game at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves won the Championship on a canter and have spent freely over the summer, adding talent at all positions on the pitch.
Mason Holgate has missed the entire Toffees preseason after picking up an injury during the Blues’ first friendly of the summer. The ailment was later diagnosed as achilles tendonitis, but the player is now back in full training as confirmed by manager Marco Silva yesterday.
Jordan Pickford only returned from his World Cup holiday last Friday but there’s no way Silva is going to keep him from playing. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Theo Walcott both got some playing time in last weekend’s friendly against Valencia, and should be in the matchday squad. Beni Baningime has an ankle injury with no return date as of now.
As for the Blues’ four new additions from yesterday, none of them are going to be on the bench. Bernard is hardly match-fit not having trained with a club for months now. Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes both just got to England yesterday, and the midfielder is injured and not expected to play until the end of the month either. Kurt Zouma also just got up to Merseyside and will need at least a week of training to get up to speed.
Wolves have added six players in the summer transfer window, so it’ll be interesting to see whether manager Nuno Espirito Santo sticks with the bulk of last season’s side. Wolves have no injury issues though star signings Leander Dendoncker and Adama Traore only just joined the squad and might not play. Portuguese internationals Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio are coming off World Cup appearances.
