Everton connection carries England past World Cup penalties jinx

New, comment

It had to come down to penalties for England didn’t it?

After a first half where they dominated the game, England scored early in the second half through captain Harry Kane’s penalty and it was all going swimmingly for the Three Lions.

However, it’s never that easy when England are involved in an international competition is it?

An increasingly chippy second half saw a raft of players, especially from Colombia, getting booked. The South American side only ever looked like scoring from a setpiece, and so it happened.

It took an outstanding flying save from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to keep England up, but from the resultant corner Yerry Mina headed home to tie it up.

A cagey and dull extra time followed where Colombia never really tried to win the game while England’s subs struggled to break through the massed ranks.

And then.. penalties, England’s worst nightmare. The Three Lions had never won a penalty shootout at the World Cup coming into the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Here’s how the shootout went.

Radamel Falcao - high and down the middle, Pickford dives to his right, GOAL.

Harry Kane - low in the corner past Ospina’s dive to his right, GOAL.

Juan Cuadrado - high over Pickford’s dive to the right, GOAL.

Marcus Rashford - same spot as Kane, same dive from Ospina, same result, GOAL.

Luis Muriel - rolls to Pickford’s left as the goalie feints right, GOAL.

Jordan Henderson - low to Ospina’s left and it’s palmed away, SAVE.

Mateus Uribe - Pickford guesses left correctly but it’s off the underside of the bar, MISS.

Kieran Trippier - high to Ospina’s right, perfect penalty, GOAL.

Carlos Bacca - down the middle and Pickford palms it away, SAVE.

Eric Dier - low to the left past Ospina’s right hand, GOAL.

ENGLAND WIN! ENGLAND WIN!

Of course you want to watch that spectacular save from Pickford again, so here you go.

Pickford’s detractors have blamed his size for his inability to make the save on Adnan Januzaj’s shot in England’s loss against Belgium with Thibaut Courtois and Arsene Wenger the latest to jump on that bandwagon. The goalie hit back at those comments though when speaking after the win -

“I did all my research. I’ve got power and agility. I don’t care if I’m not the biggest keeper because it’s about being there in the moment and making the save and I was.

“It’s all about the set position and I got a hand to it. We knew we had this game, even if it had to go to penalties, we knew we were capable of winning.”

PS - England’s only penalty miss was by Liverpool captain Henderson, while the winning penalty was scored by Dier, who spent some time on loan with the Blues’ youth side.

Just saying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
