Everton’s on-loan forward scores first goal

Henry Onyekuru has opened his Galatasaray account

Henry Onyekuru scores his first goal for Galatasaray

In just his second appearance for Galatasaray since making the switch on loan, Henry Onyekuru has opened his goalscoring account with the Turkish club.

The Nigerian forward scored his side’s only goal in a 2-1 loss against Spanish side Valencia in a friendly yesterday.

He came on in the 61st minute as a substitute, and scored just eight minutes later after being put through 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper by an incisive pass from teammate Sinan Gumuş.

The 21-year-old had made his Galatasaray debut midweek in a 3-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven, with Onyekuru coming on for about half an hour in that game as well. His loan deal from Everton just came through days before that game as he continues to rehabilitate from a knee injury incurred in December.

After the game he tweeted his happiness at opening his account, saying -

”Preseason continues… it was great to score my first goal for the club, seems like so long ago .. I can get used to this feeling again.”

Onyekuru, prior to picking up a serious knee injury that saw him miss the 2018 World Cup for Nigeria, was on a torrid scoring clip for Anderlecht in Belgium, where he picked up 10 goals in 28 appearances, including six games in the Champions League as well.

As defending Super Lig champions, Galatasaray won automatic qualification for the group stages of the Champions League, with the draw to be held in the end of August.
