UPDATE: 6:50pm BST

This story appears to have legs, as it’s been confirmed by trusted reporter Paul Joyce.

It is no secret that Everton are in the hunt for Leighton Baines’ long-term successor and have been linked with close to a dozen candidates for the position this summer.

Interest in Barcelona’s left back Lucas Digne seemed to spike after the World Cup, and now the Mirror are reporting that the Blues have indeed made a £22million offer with add-ons not included in that sum.

Like all transfer rumours, it’s hard to prove veracity of the report until we hear this from a couple of other sources too, but the article goes on to say that Barca were not planning to let go of the player who is a backup to Jordi Alba. Apparently it’s the player looking to trigger a move due to the reduced playing time which led him to being dropped from Didier Deschamps’ World Cup winning France squad.

Digne featured in only 20 games for Barcelona last season, and despite playing in the World Cup qualifiers for the French, the last of his 21 caps came in March of this year before the final selection for the global tournament was made.

Lucas Digne’s time at Barcelona has not gone how he’d hoped. For a fullback he was great in the air and a very strong tackler by percentage. However, his offensive contribution was basically nothing at Paris St. Germain which is why he was shipped off to AS Roma and then on to Barcelona, with the player failing to stick at either location.

Meanwhile, Juventus and Bayern Munich were also rumoured to have looked at him this summer before moving on. More to come on this, we suspect.
