There had been rumours that Wayne Rooney’s exit from Everton wasn’t necessarily on the best of terms, especially since he had indicated a number of times that he had wanted to stay but it appeared that there was no place for him in Marcel Brands and Marco Silva’s vision for the Toffees.

That was confirmed today during his introductory press conference for D.C. United today when he clarified that his exit had little to do with him. The player was being unveiled to the MLS in the US capital earlier this afternoon, and spoke with the media.

“It’s football. Everton is the club I grew up supporting I was delighted & grateful to go back last summer.

“But in football you never know whats round the corner. I’ve made the decision to come here

“I’m sure there are a lot of questions about why I left Everton, and I’m sure & the people who want to know can ask Everton Football Club and let them answer.”

Sounds like there’s more here that will eventually come out.

In the meantime, Washington DC have never had a player of Rooney’s magnitude because the mayor of the city Muriel Bowser has announced that 2nd July is officially now Wayne Rooney Day going forward!
