New Director of Football at Everton Marcel Brands laid down the law very early on when he started with the Blues, making it clear that culling the bloated 38-man roster to a more manageable 25-30 players was going to his main aim during this summer’s transfer window.
To that end he has already offloaded Wayne Rooney and Ramiro Funes Mori, with Joel Robles leaving on a free transfer after his contract expired.
Goal are reporting now that Brands is continuing to listen to calls for at least eight other players, here’s a quick look at them and who has come knocking so far.
Kevin Mirallas (3yrs left on contract) - had his Olympiakos loan deal terminated due to poor performance, only links have been Standard Liege back in Belgium.
Ashley Williams (1yr left on contract) - poor season capped off with a sending off in key game against Burnley, hasn’t played since. A return to Swansea City has been mooted, but he will have to take a big pay cut. Stoke City have also been linked.
Davy Klaassen (4yrs left on contract) - was found wanting early in the season, failed to make the breakthrough back into the squad after that. Linked with a loan move to Besiktas.
Oumar Niasse (2yrs left on contract) - incredible comeback story as he worked his way back into the first team picture. His hard running and finishing are valuable assets, Blues shouldn’t be in a hurry to sell him even though Galatasaray and Cardiff City are interested.
Morgan Schneiderlin (3yrs left on contract) - French midfielder remains unpopular with the bulk of the fanbase, and has said that he’s contemplating a move back home, likely with Olympique Marseille.
Yannick Bolasie (3yrs left on contract) - the winger hasn’t really worked out at Everton despite being a likeable enough player. Turkish interest for him too, with Fenerbahce in the lead for a loan deal.
Cuco Martina (2yrs left on contract) - fullback became the punchbag of those criticizing the Koeman era. Will likely slot into the squad of a lower level Premier League side or drop down to the Championship.
