Just recently, Everton were linked with Germany and Hertha Berlin’s Marvin Plattenhardt in their search to find a long term replacement for Leighton Baines. That appears to still be the case, but according to Sky Sports, another target is now in the frame - Bayer Leverkusen’s Brazilian left back, Wendell.
Everton are targeting Bayer Leverkusen left-back Wendell as a long-term successor to Leighton Baines, according to Sky sources. Wendell, 24, made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side last season and is being looked at as a replacement for the 33-year-old Baines.
Wendell is a few years younger than Plattenhardt, and a bit more dynamic, though he lacks the German international’s reputation. In truth, either fullback would be an impressive move for Everton.
Wendell never joined PSG as this highlight video’s title suggests, but perhaps it can still be instructive in terms of the player’s ability.
Everton should be able to get another year out of Leighton Baines, and Antonee Robinson is going to deserve a look sooner rather than later. In the meantime, a player in their prime could be an excellent bridge between the two left backs Everton currently have on their books.
