Things are getting desperate for Southampton. The Saints enter the weekend in 18th place in the Premier League, a point from safety. In a few days, they are set for an epic clash with 17th-place Swansea City. However, they can’t look past Everton this weekend. A loss to the Blues could doom Southampton, regardless of their results the rest of the way.
The Toffees are in the midst of a fine, albeit unspectacular, run under Sam Allardyce. They took eight points from four matches in April after an uneven month of March. However, this team got spanked 4-1 by the Saints back in November under the guidance of David Unsworth. Their lone goalscorer, Gylfi Sigurdsson, will not feature on Saturday. Southampton hasn’t won both Premier League games over Everton since the 1997-98 season.
Of course, these aren’t really the same two teams that faced off more than five months ago. Both clubs have hired different managers since that day. They have each added and lost players that appeared in November. That first match was at St. Mary’s; this one will be at Goodison Park. Southampton wasn’t really thinking about relegation. Everything is different now, and that should result in 90 hard-fought minutes that will either thrill the neutral or put them to sleep.
