Another country has gone ahead and released their 23 man roster for the World Cup ahead of June’s deadline. Senegal have named Idrissa Gueye to the squad, of course, but in a weird twist, left Oumar Niasse at home.

Gueye, 28, played in 38 matches for Everton this season, and will play every minute that he’s available for Senegal. Along with Sadio Mane, Gana is one of the top players in the side.

Senegal is taking a whopping eight forwards to Russia, including the likes of 32 year old Moussa Sow from Bursaspor and Premier League washout Diafra Sakho, but they still couldn’t find room for Oumar Niasse. If that seems unfair and incorrect, well, that’s because it is.

Niasse registered nine goals for Everton this season and proved to be one of the most impactful substitutes in the Premier League. You can always count on Oumar for a timely goal and an exemplary attitude, and Niasse plays against much better competition than many of the strikers included.

We may never know what it is that caused Les Lions to leave Oumar Niasse off their roster, but we can say that they’ll be worse off for it. Good luck to Gana, though - please stay healthy.
