Everton loanee Joe Williams proved to be a revelation in the Championship for Barnsley, breaking into the first team and becoming one of their key players as the season went along.
However, as reported by the BBC, the midfielder has now returned to the Blues after he incurred a muscle injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season and Williams is back at Finch Farm receiving treatment for it.
The 21-year-old made 38 appearances for Barnsley, and did very well for himself in the defensive midfielder position, an area that Everton appear to be blessed at with Beni Baningime and Callum Connolly waiting in the wings.
Williams is in the top ten in the Championship in terms of tackles attempted and executed per 90 minutes played (over ten appearances) and his workrate has impressed plenty of Barnsley fans as well as his former manager Paul Heckingbottom who is now at Leeds and wants him there.
It is unlikely that Williams is going to get a chance to play much at Everton next season, and it’ll serve the Blues well to loan him out again, ideally to a Premier League side, but failing that a Championship contender would do his development a lot of good.
