Everton lead Burnley 1-0 midway through the first half after the January transfer window £27 million signing Cenk Tosun scored his first goal for the Toffees. The Turkish striker has come under some scrutiny lately after Sam Allardyce’s negative comments about the player resulted in his losing his starting spot, but in his first start since then he has proven he belongs.
It had seemed innocuous enough after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s freekick from distance was partly cleared away. However the Icelander did well to win the ball back and free Theo Walcott down the right.
His low cross was nodded on by Seamus Coleman and Tosun came in from around the penalty spot to head home with some authority. Burnley goalie Pope had no chance as the Blues scored first for only the fourth time in their travels this season.
