It’s easy to see why the Turkish media has been running rampant with rumours of Cenk Tosun returning to Besiktas in January.
The striker is a fan favourite not only at the Black Eagles but pretty much all over the country. Tosun has also struggled both internationally and at Everton this season, scoring only twice despite pretty much doing everything Marco Silva has asked of him, except find the net regularly. Additionally, he’s now lost his starting spot in the team with Silva opting to use Richarlison upfront instead where he seems to have found success.
Speaking to Turkish outlet mynet, Tosun has now debunked those rumours (mynet, via 101 Great Goals) -
“Besiktas is my home, but I’ve opened a new page in my career and I’m happy at Everton.
“In addition, the news of Besiktas’ interest is gossip.”
There remain a couple of solid reasons for the Turkish forward to stay put where he is on Merseyside. First and foremost he remains the best ‘specialist’ striker on the Blues, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin yet to hit his stride and Oumar Niasse not consistent enough to start.
Additionally, once the games start coming thick and fast, Silva will be rotating players in and out of his starting lineup and Tosun’s chance will come. In fact, his opportunity might present itself even sooner than expected, with injured Gylfi Sigurdsson likely to miss this weekend’s tilt against Cardiff City and Richarlison probably slotting in at the #10 position, allowing Tosun to return to his striker role.
