Everton left it very late but brushed aside Crystal Palace 2-0 at Goodison Park earlier today with goals from substitutes Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun.

After the game, manager Marco Silva was pleased with the performance of Barcelona on-loan midfielder Andre Gomes, who made his first appearance for the club starting today.

“He did well, like we expected. He is working really hard and well. He is a player who can give us different things in that zone.

“I am happy with Tom Davies and his performances as well. I knew and I expected a tough game this afternoon and we needed Andre to control the ball and give different solutions for us in some moments. He is a little bit of a different profile from Tom.”

Silva’s inspired substitutions made all the difference, with the third sub Ademola Lookman laying on the assist for the opening goal from Calvert-Lewin.

“It is football. Sometimes you change and everything goes well, like happened this afternoon. Other times you try and it’s not the same.

“We tried, we changed the formation when we brought on Dominic and they did well. It is important for us and for me as a coach that when three players come on, they change the team.

“I am happy because the three they come in and helped. Last two games Cenk came in and scored twice.

“Lookman and Dominic (Calvert-Lewin) they are working really hard to achieve what they want, to start in our starting eleven. Today they helped the team.”

Today was the first game Silva has had his full complement of players to choose from after a number of players returned from injury, and he was quite pleased about it.

“It is really important for a club at our level. It’s what we have to do, not just the 11 players but more than that. They must show us that everybody is ready to play and fighting for his position in the squad.

“This moment it’s hard for me to name not just the starting eleven but the squad list. Its in this way we can grow as a squad and a club.
