Full time: Everton just made it hard on themselves today. Certainly should not have lost to Southampton at home. Made too many changes to a winning side and then the penalty debacle. Great save on Walcott’s penalty, but Richarlison should be very disappointed with his overall performance today.

Cedric Soares now up, game on the line.. scores, game over.

Theo Walcott.. sees his penalty saved. Disaster.

Matt Targett.. Stek saves!! Game back on, 3-3!

Kurt Zouma.. puts his foot through it, goal, whew.

Pierre Emile Hojbjerg.. scores and the Saints lead 3-2 now.

Richarlison.. fancy run up and hits it way way high. Oof. Was off the pace today.

Stephen Davis.. roofs it and it’s 2-2 now.

Cenk Tosun.. Gunn got his hand to it but couldn’t keep it out.

Danny Ings.. roundly booed, sends Stek the wrong way. 1-1 now.

Leighton Baines goes first.. just scores, off the underside of the bar!

90’+3’: There’s the final whistle, and it stays 1-1, to penalties we go.

87’: Baines cross into the box and Keane with a free header.. but he puts it well over.

85’: Walcott with a great finish from a Niasse pass, and he makes it 1-1!

83’: Some VAR confusion here. Richarlison pulled down, and looked like we were going to review for a red card but not clear really what happened.

80’: Theo Walcott is now on, with Schneiderlin going off. Very very tense at Goodison Park.

77’: So close for Kenny. Shot with some heat from distance, but it’s just wide.

70’: Everton killing themselves with giveaways, even more so in the second half.

65’: Ings comes close and then so does Lemina. Blues still at sixes and sevens in defence while the Saints are just wasting time at every opportunity.

60’: Richarlison is coming on for Lookman now.

57’: Lookman foiled! Goalie Angus Gunn rushed out to save 1-on-1 when the winger was clean through.

51’: The Goodison cat is back, making his first appearance of the season.

47’: Another setpiece comes to nothing. Baines’ freekick headed straight at the goalie by Kurt Zouma.

46’: Saints get us underway. Oumar Niasse is on for Kieran Dowell. Straight 4-4-2 at this point.

Halftime: Everton have basically done everything but score. Not really created any great chances, but on the balance of play shouldn’t be behind at this point. What changes will Silva make at the break?

44’: Where have we seen this before? Everton control the game, don’t score and now Redmond picks out Ings who puts it in. 1-0 just before the break.

Embarrassing defending really, once again too much space between Schneiderlin and Keane.

43’: Mix-up between Schneiderlin and Keane lets Redmond in, and he hits the base of the post. Yikes.

39’: Morgan Schneiderlin the first to go into the book today, brings down Lemina in a dangerous spot. Freekick cleared away by Baines.

29’: Ohhhh Ade! So so close, his curling shot from a distance is juuust wide of the post. He’s really grown into the game.

25’: Everton are really starting to put their foot down here, and Lookman has been in the heart of everything. Tosun has been very active too.

12’: Lookman has been getting involved quite a bit which is good to see hear. The trio of Lookman, Dowell and Bernard have been doing well, just need to get Cenk Tosun a better ball.

4’: Michael Keane beaten by a ball over the top that Danny Ings get to, but Maarten Stekelenburg is equal to him and makes the save. Stop us if you’ve heard that before about the centrehalf.

Lineups: After saying he wouldn’t tinker too much, Marco Silva makes seven changes (!!) to the starting lineup. Kieran Dowell and Ademola Lookman will get their big chance today. Also will be good to see Leighton Baines back on the pitch, assuming he’ll be wearing the captain’s armband too. It’s been strange watching Everton without our old faithful #3.

Mark Hughes with a bit of a strange lineup too - five defenders, two midfielders, one winger, and two strikers. Is that a 5-2-1-2? 5-2-3? Sort that one out.

Everton take on Southampton today at Goodison Park in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup (aka the League Cup). The Blues have already beaten the Saints once at home this season in the Premier League, and will be looking to repeat that result today.

The winner of this clash will travel to Leicester City in the Fourth Round. There is no replay or extra time in this stage of the competition, so if the scores are tied after 90 minutes it’ll go straight to penalties.

VAR will be utilized for this game if required.
