Everton’s opening day win over Stoke City was huge. They scrapped by with a 1-0 victory thanks to Wayne Rooney, but the boys looked lively mid-week against Hajduk Split. Now the Toffees begin a tough stretch of fixtures that will see them travel around Europe while fending off four consecutive title contenders in England over the next month.
Manchester City will hope to keep pace with their cross-town rivals, Manchester United, at the top of the table. The Cityzens looked strong in their 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the opener and they have had nine days of rest in between, whereas their visitors are going on just three days of recovery.
That said, Everton got the best of City a season ago. At the Etihad, the two sides drew 1-1, but Maarten Stekelenburg saved two penalties that day. In the fixture at Goodison Park in January, the Blues embarrassed City to the tune of a 4-0 scoreline.
Both clubs have gotten significant stronger on paper since that last meeting. And Everton may see their club-record signing, Gylfi Sigurdsson, make his debut at some point. For City, anything short of three points will be a disappointment. From Everton’s perspective, another draw would be just fine, but a win would be sublime.
