The pending sale of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United has meant that Everton’s transfer kitty is, more or less, about to reset to net zero. That’s good news, because there is still work to be done on Ronald Koeman’s squad.
Gylfi Sigurdsson, Olivier Giroud, and Wayne Rooney may all come through the door at USM Finch Farm, but the Blues still need a true wide player and a fullback to round things out for the upcoming campaign.
With that in mind, Sky Sports report that Everton have renewed their interest in Leicester City winger Demarai Gray.
Gray, 21, is rumored to be less than enthused regarding his playing time, and would likely be interested in a move to Goodison Park where there are fewer wingers standing in his way.
The England U21 international was teammates with Jordan Pickford and Mason Holgate recently, and scored a goal against Poland at the U21 European Championship.
Gray excels on the ball and shows a penchant for the incredible. Some development is still required with his shooting, but there’s time.
Gray moved from Birmingham City to Leicester in January of 2016 for £3.7 million. His release clause is now rumored to be in the range of £22 million, which while steep, could be considered just a drop in the bucket for “new Everton”.
The Liverpool Echo seem to be convinced that the Blues are actually not at all interested, but given Everton’s previous curiosity and the report from Sky Sports, it would not be surprising if the rumors were true. Gray was previously scouted by Steve Walsh during Walsh’s time at the King Power.
It’s clear the player has loads of potential. Whether or not Ronald Koeman pursues this deal further or pivots to another winger remains to be seen.
