Benfica want king’s ransom for alleged Everton transfer target

Yeah, probably not.

Portuguese newspapers are a notoriously sketchy lot. Everton have a lot of money to spend this summer, and have allegedly gazumped West Ham United once or twice already (Henry Onyekuru, hello!).

Benfica are interested in offloading Mexican striker Raul Jimenez. West Ham are interested. Everton are apparently free-spenders. Ergo, the Blues are interested in Jimenez to help fill the Romelu Lukaku sized hole at the front of their attack. That’s what The Record says, anyway.

The Portuguese club’s president is reportedly in England for some sort of transfer discussions, but then again, so is his playing squad - Benfica are holding their preseason here.

It all seems to be a very thinly constructed transfer rumor. There’s no doubt that Everton need a striker, and there’s no doubt that West Ham could probably use 18 new players.

However, the idea that the Blues would spend €50 million on a player with nine league starts in 2016-17 is silly, no matter what kind of fortune Farhad Moshiri has at hand.

Raul Jimenez lacks the pedigree of Olivier Giroud, the goals of Christian Benteke, and the ability of Edin Dzeko. This is one rumor you can put in the paper shredder.
