One of the quirks to Everton’s search for midfield depth this offseason has been the question of what would happen to the likes of Tom Davies, James McCarthy, and Muhamed Besic.
None of the players linked with the Blues in midfield have necessarily been an improvement on their current options. Andreas Samaris, Marcelo Brozovic, and Moussa Sissoko are all interesting players in their own right, but not really world beaters.
Blaise Matuidi, however, is a world beater. Thanks to the ascension of Adrien Rabiot, Paris St. Germain have made the central midfielder available, per L’Equipe. Somewhat shockingly, the asking price is a cut-rate £18 million, and Everton are reported to have serious interest.
Quite simply, Matuidi is a star. He would instantly upgrade Everton’s midfield, likely playing in front of Morgan Schneiderlin and just behind Davy Klaassen. Idrissa Gueye could be relegated to bench duty for a time, but Ronald Koeman needs to do some serious introspection if a player like Matuidi is available for so little.
The Frenchman is 30 years old, but possesses quite a bit left in the tank. In 292 career appearances for PSG, Matuidi has 33 goals and 30 assists. He’s played nearly 60 times for France, and can play both the 8 and 6 positions, even deputising on the wing and at fullback occasionally.
Everton are still looking for that statement signing. Bringing in a long time French international and PSG star would unequivocally be one. Both Manchester United and Manchester City are also rumored to be interested, however, Everton can provide similar wages with more playing time.
If Blaise Matuidi is interested in coming to Liverpool and linking up with compatriots Morgan Schneiderlin and potentially Olivier Giroud, Goodison Park should be his new home.
