Wayne Rooney might not move to Everton after all

Wayne Rooney has been on the fringes of the Manchester United squad for quite some time, and given his connections to Everton, was rumored to be joining the Ronald Koeman project this summer.

However, if Manchester United’s kit reveal today is any indication, Rooney could be staying put at Old Trafford.

The former Blue was the star of the kit’s introduction, leading many to believe he could see out his contract in Manchester.

The reaction to the Rooney rumors on Merseyside has been decidedly mixed. While most would love to welcome back a club legend, the United captain’s wages and the role he would likely demand are seen as too much for a team on the rise.

Given that Rooney no longer plays as an out and out striker, the arrival of Davy Klaassen and potentially Gylfi Sigurdsson means that he would almost certainly be relegated to bench duty.

All told, the developing situation is likely best for two of three parties. Rooney gets to remain on his current wages, and Everton gets to continue building through younger players. Jose Mourinho, though, will probably be left scratching his head over how to fit the Englishman into a Champions League side.

Wayne Rooney has likely not made his final appearance at Goodison Park, but moving forward, don’t expect to see him in royal blue.
