The Premier League clubs have submitted the lists of players that they will be keeping in their squads going into the summer transfer window, as well as those players they will be releasing.
For Everton, the two most prominent names are strikers Arouna Kone and Conor McAleny, with Jack Bainbridge, Delial Brewster, Michael Donohue, Tyrone Duffus, Russell Griffiths, Connor Hunt, Josef Yarney and James Yates also released.
Among the players from the other teams though are some intriguing possibilities should Everton choose to add them to their squad which they will have to build up for challenging on four fronts next season.
The writers at Royal Blue Mersey poked through the list and came up with some thoughts on the following.
Jesus Navas
It's become a trendy act to poke fun at the Spanish winger -- and perhaps his performance this season warrants that. He accrued not a single goal or assist in nearly 1300 minutes of action across all competitions, averaging less than one key pass and one completed cross per match. His humiliating season culminated in a few bizarre appearances at right-back, where he clearly does not belong.
But in his three prior seasons at Manchester City, Navas put up four goals and 26 assists -- averaging one assist per three matches -- not earth-shattering, but a decent return. In that time, he averaged around 1.5 key passes and 1.5 crosses completed per match -- again, not incredible, but certainly respectable. If his wage demands are reasonable, he'd be a good depth signing at wing, a position where the uncertain futures of Yannick Bolasie, Aaron Lennon, Gerard Deulofeu, and Ross Barkley have created substantial holes. (Adam)
Gael Clichy
Just like in the right back position, Everton are lacking decent cover for Leighton Baines. Brendan Galloway isn't a left back and Luke Garbutt appears to have fallen off the radar, sadly. Clichy, therefore, makes a lot of sense. He's got Premier League and Champions League experience has played at a high level for most of his career and would viably challenge Baines and potentially give him a bit of a push. His wages could be an issue but on a one-year deal, he's a decent bet. (Sean)
I'd have to second Gael Clichy. I've been saying for a while we need depth at left back and he would be one of the better options available to us. Assuming Everton make it to the group stages of the Europa League, having someone like Clichy would allow Baines to rest without sacrificing talent at the left back position. (Matt)
Willy Caballero
The Argentine beat out Claudio Bravo for the starting spot, but that didn’t take much doing as Bravo was so abjectly miserable that had John Stones put on the goalie’s gloves he could have done much better.
However, Caballero is a decent goalkeeper with plenty of experience: 117 games in La Liga, 23 in the Premier League, and 15 in the Champions League. He could prove to be a more reliable backup than Maarten Stekelenburg if Everton do not sign another goaltender and keep Joel Robles around. (Calvin)
Victor Valdes
Everton should take a flyer on Victor Valdes. Going into Europe, they need an experienced backup who can still perform at a high level, and Stekelenburg is simply not good anymore.
Valdes played well for an awful Boro team last season and would likely relish a chance to compete in Europe one more time.
The Jordan Pickford deal remains incomplete, and signing Valdes, a long term Barcelona veteran, would represent a simple and effective way of improving the roster. (Chris)
