Welcome to the refreshed Royal Blue Mersey!
To celebrate the new look and feel of our sports communities, we’re sharing stories of how and why we became fans of our favorite teams. If you’d like to share your story, head over to the FanPosts to write your own post.
Come Fan With Us!
It was over a couple of decades ago - a distant uncle of mine who lived a stone’s throw from Goodison Park was visiting us in Kenya where I was born and raised. He’d heard that I was about five years old and was starting to get interested in football, so he brought me a calendar of his favorite team - Everton.
He went on to tell me stories of past greats like Dixie Dean and Alan Ball and how the team in the early eighties was starting to develop chemistry under Howard Kendall and had been taking the First Division by storm.
The first few years of my awareness of Everton were great - the Blues swept all before them, winning the League title and FA Cup multiple times. And as I grew up my uncle continued to send presents: a scarf, a jersey, a plush toy as the years went on.
Fans come in all sizes and shapes from everywhere in the world, and the Everton community welcomes them with wide-open arms. We even have a saying -
Evertonians are born not manufactured
We do not choose; We are chosen
Those who understand need no explanation
Those that don't understand don't matter
It’s like falling in love, there’s no reasoning, you just know - that’s how it is when you’re an Everton fan. Where you are and what you’re doing don’t matter, the club finds you and embraces you, which is why this is also known as the People’s Club.
That early success ended and apart from a sole FA Cup triumph in 1995, the barren spell has stretched on and on. Players have come and players have gone, and indeed, managers have come and gone but the Toffees have remained steadfast in our love, our collective Blue heart beating strong and proud.
And even now, with a new owner, a new stadium on the horizon and a new era of success beckoning, one thing has not changed - the humble passion of an Everton fan, a family which I proudly proclaim to be part of.
Tell us why you’re a fan of the Toffees! Write your own cool/amazing/interesting story of how or why you became an Everton diehard!
