Chelsea put together a champions-worthy performance at Goodison Park as Everton bottled it once again playing a top-six team. What made this worse was that the visitors hadn’t kept a clean sheet for months before today but effectively choked off the Toffees.
The first half started with a bang, with chances on either end. Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit the post and Romelu Lukaku lost his footing and wasn’t able to capitalize on the rebound. Chelsea too were getting Eden Hazard free of Idrissa Gueye’s shackles, but the Senegalese midfielder got better as the half went on. Early in the game the hosts were outpossessing the visitors almost two-to-one, but that evened out towards the end of the half as Everton were pinned back for stretches.
Chelsea took the lead just past midway through the second half, with Pedro scoring an absolute worldie. His shot from outside the box was a thunderbolt that went over a diving Maarten Stekelenburg and just under the bar. The second goal game from a Gueye foul on Hazard outside the box, with the Belgian’s freekick parried out by Stekelenburg onto Gary Cahill’s knee to seal the game.
After the second, Everton looked to have lost all interest in defending, and the visitors put together an excellent passing sequence to rub the salt in the wounds by making it 3-0.
Arouna Kone and Kevin Mirallas came on for Calvert-Lewin and Valencia but they were completely ineffective unlike Willian who scored the third.
