It has been a mostly positive season for Everton. The club is much improved from a year ago. The U23 squad won the Premier League 2. And on Saturday the team officially clinched a spot in the 2017-18 Europa League. The lowlight of the campaign, however, was a 5-0 beatdown at the hands of today’s opponent, Chelsea, back in November.
The league leaders come to Goodison Park in topsy-turvy form. They bested Southampton last time out, but have also suffered recent losses to Manchester United and Crystal Palace, making April their weakest month so far. They have just a four-point lead over second-place Tottenham, but their final matches of the season get much easier after leaving Merseyside. Regardless, they will be hungry for some breathing room in the table.
Everton does still have an outside shot at a top four finish, but a more realistic goal would be to catch sixth place Arsenal. The Toffees enter Sunday two points back of the Gunners, who will be taking on Spurs in the North London derby later in the day.
