A lot can change in the world of football in the space of a week and it is no different for Everton.

Last week, many Evertonians were cursing Tottenham Hotspur after a 3-2 defeat at White Hart Lane ended the Blues unbeaten run in 2017. This week, they’ll love them.

You see, Spurs win over Millwall in the FA Cup today means Everton now have a firm chance of playing Europa League football next season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured a comfortable 6-0 win over the Lions at White Hart Lane earlier today.

That result means that the teams remaining in the competition are Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea/Manchester United.

All of those currently occupy a top six place in the Premier League, which means that the Europa League place usually afforded to the victors of the FA Cup will now be handed to the team sitting in seventh place in the league.

That spot is currently occupied by none other than Everton, who are seven points clear of West Bromwich Albion in 8th, a team they beat 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Of course, let’s not count our chickens just yet. With ten games of the season still to play and four of those up against top six sides, seventh place is far from a foregone conclusion.

Nonetheless, it seems Everton have a newfound incentive for the remainder of the campaign, which is more than pleasing given many thought the season was over after the loss to Leicester City in the FA Cup back in January.
