It took the Everton players some time getting used to the new manager, but now that they’ve gotten used to it, the results are showing on the pitch. As for those who didn’t adapt to the new Everton, simply put, they’re not on the squad any more.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku, speaking with Soccer Saturday, noted the changes in style between Ronald Koeman and former manager Roberto Martinez, who ironically now manages the forward at Belgium.
"When he came in he had these ideas, and concepts of players, so for us we had to adapt because we worked under Roberto Martinez and it was a totally different style of football.
"Here, it is a bit more defensive, more about organisation, how we are set up, it's totally different. But I think we adapted well, we are seventh in the league and everything is positive.
"I think we can be happy, but I think we can improve and he wants us to improve. Hopefully it's going to be a good end to the season.
"I think now we have to go for Europa League spot. Why not? You have to believe in your ability and power as a team, and get good results, not drop easy points."
On a personal front, it’s looking like he will beat his last season’s Premier League output of 18 goals.
"It's been going well, 12 goals, 13 in all competitions, quite happy but there is still room for improvement, and I want to improve every day and deliver more and more. So the challenge is there and I want to take it.
"It's been good. The consistency is still there, bur like I said there is room for improvement.
"I think there is a little change, obviously, players going and coming. Obviously the atmosphere is a bit different because you are entering the second half of the season when all the teams are getting into the rhythm.
"It's a bit different, the atmosphere, but we are ready for it."
The rumblings of him leaving Everton are never far away from the surface, but the striker maintains his only priority right now remains getting the Blues to break into the top six.
"Time will tell. At the minute I'm just focusing on the season right now.
"I just want to help my team-mates achieve the Europa League spot, and then we'll see what's going to happen in the summer."
The extended interview with Romelu Lukaku will be played from midday on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News HQ.
