After officiating the home leg of the Merseyside Derby that Everton lost to a last minute goal, Mike Dean gets his second Blues game of the season away at Middlesbrough. He had handed out three bookings in that game to the Toffees - Ross Barkley, Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gueye, while the Reds had only one.
The Derby was his first time officiating a game for either club in over a decade. He’s already been handing out the cards this season like it’s Christmas again, with 74 yellows and 5 sendings-off in just 18 Premier League games this season.
He has only ever refereed two other Everton games, both away games. On Boxing Day 2003 he oversaw the Toffees 3-2 loss at Old Trafford against Manchester United, and then sent off Duncan Ferguson in a 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic. Dean was the fourth official in the Blues’ Tuesday-night game against Arsenal as well.
Dean has handled two Boro games this season, an away 0-0 draw at Arsenal and a 1-0 home win over Hull City, with just the one yellow card for the Teessiders in the games.
