Final Verdict:
Sam Allardyce set up with a three-man backline with Idrissa Gueye out and Morgan Schneiderlin as the sole holding midfielder. The Blues came to the Hawthorns ready to frustrate, and did just that in the first half, keeping the hosts at bay in a pretty dull game. WBA did have a couple of clear chances but were poor finishers and didn’t really trouble Jordan Pickford.
Yannick Bolasie looked good in his first start in over a year, making it sixty minutes and was full of his usual trickery. Didn’t necessarily run at the defence, but looked spry with the ball.
WBA had their chances, especially from crosses into the box, but lacked any real quality. Allardyce’s said came to play for a draw and got just that, and Oumar Niasse could have even stolen a win late on but both his shots were well-saved.
