CONFIRMED: Gibson also gone to Sunderland

Rarely-used midfielder Darron Gibson has been transferred to Sunderland to join the Everton old-boys brigade that is assembling under former Toffees manager David Moyes. He cleared his medicals earlier today with the Black Cats and has been handed an 18-month contract that expires at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Gibson had signed a two-year contract with the Blues at the beginning of the current season, but never made it beyond the periphery of the side. With the current logjam in midfield, it was unlikely he would ever play for the Blues again.

The midfielder appeared 51 times for the Blues since 2012 when he came over from Manchester United, and scored two times.

Gibson will join fellow former Evertonians Jack Rodwell, Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe, Joleon Lescott and Bryan Oviedo at the Black Cats.

Oviedo also completed his transfer earlier in the day to Sunderland as well. The pair did not get much chance to feature for the Blues under manager Ronald Koeman.

Here’s what Moyes had to say about his new signings -

“Bryan is a very good player and he’ll help us get forward. He’s quick and overall he’s a decent left-back.

“I signed him for Everton from Copenhagen as cover for Leighton Baines at the time, and he’s only not getting in because of how well Leighton’s done.

“He’s 26 which is a good age for us and I think he’s a really good character – a good boy – and I’m hoping he’s someone who will help us over the years.

“We’ve got Darron on an 18-month contract and I think he’s a very good footballer; he’ll add a bit of quality with his passing and his play and I’d love him to add goals.

“He has a really good strike and if he can add goals from midfield it would be a big bonus.”
