Everton beat Southampton 3-0 yesterday with a flurry of goals late on in the game. The Saints, playing their third game in six days, had no answers as substitute Enner Valencia kickstarted a mostly dull game to that point.
The forward pounced on a rebound off Romelu Lukaku to open the scoring with his first goal for Everton since his summer loan started. Then he was brought down in the area trying to get to a lateral from Kevin Mirallas, with Leighton Baines stepping up and slotting home coolly to double the lead. In the last minutes of the game, youngster Tom Davies found Lukaku running free on the right with a raking pass, and the Belgian fired a thunderbolt home to put the result beyond doubt.
For all their success though, this game could have gone very differently had the visitors’ Jay Rodriguez been luckier. He had a goal disallowed for an offside or handball, fired over after turning smartly, and had a couple of shots saved by Joel Robles as well.
