Can the Toffees welcome 2017 with a home win?

We made it to 2017. We sang “Old Lang Syne”, drank the champagne (among other things) and withstood the resulting hangover. Now, it’s time for some Everton football once again as the hectic holiday period wraps up.

The Toffees host Southampton. These two teams last met all the way back on November 27. So if it feels like they just played, that’s because they did. The first matchup of the season was an atrocious performance from the Blues, who failed to create many chances and gave up one crap goal to Charlie Austin.

With the transfer window just opening, not much has changed with either side, yet. But Ronald Koeman is clearly in the midst of an overhaul that could see the kids get some serious minutes until reinforcements are brought it, pushing the aging veterans into substitute duty. This could be exciting, embarrassing, depressing and uplifting all at once.

Bring it on, 2017!
