Everton will be without Maarten Stekelenburg and James McCarthy for their first game of 2017. The pair were injured earlier in the month during the Merseyside Derby, and are yet to resume training.

Bryan Oviedo has resumed training, but is unlikely to be ready for this game. Muhamed Besic and Yannick Bolasie have long term injuries and continue to be out. The Bosnian midfielder is expected to return to physical work starting in mid-February, while Bolasie is facing a second surgery and will not return for this 2016-17 season.

Winger Gerard Deulofeu is being linked with a move away from Everton, and it will be interesting to see if he is makes the squad.

Opponents Southampton will be without central defender Virgil van Dijk, who is suspended after picking up a red card in the Saints’ last game against West Bromwich Albion.

Nathan Redmond will return to the team from suspension, and Ryan Bertrand is expected to start after being rested for the previous game.

Jordy Clasie and Alex McCarthy are out for another couple of weeks while Charlie Austin, Matt Targett and Jeremy Pied are longer term injuries.
