Another promising player from David Unsworth’s talented Everton Under-23 squad has gone out on loan for the rest of the season. Right back Gethin Jones is the latest to try get some senior-level experience, joining Championship side Barnsley.
The Tykes were shocked last night by Blackpool and eliminated from the FA Cup, but Jones did not feature in the game having played for the Toffees U23s on Sunday night. Barnsley are currently in tenth in the Championship and in contention for a promotion playoff spot.
This will be the 21-year-old’s second loan stint, having previously played for Plymouth Argyle in 2015 in their run to the League Two play-off semi-final. The Australian-born Welshman has appeared 12 times for the youth side this season, with five assists. He also has seven Wales youth international caps.
Jones becomes the third youngster to go out on loan, with Callum Connolly joining Wigan Athletic and Conor Grant at Doncaster Rovers. Unsworth had previously said that he expects to see movement in and out of his youth side in this January transfer window.
