It was always going to take a super-human effort from one of the other mere mortals that plied their trade for Everton to displace Idrissa Gueye from the Man of the Match voting, and so it was.

Romelu Lukaku’s memorable 11-minute hattrick in the second half was enough to beat Sunderland and the three points resulting sent the Toffees up to third in the Premier League table. It also edged him just ahead of the midfielder in the ratings poll to get him the award.

We had 206 votes this week, with Lukaku (score 4.77) leading the way.

Gueye had a great game too, coming in narrowly second (score 4.75) and even registered an assist for Lukaku’s first. The quality of the opposition had more to do with it, but the midfielder showed off an attacking dimension that his predecessor James McCarthy doesn’t have.

Winger Yannick Bolasie (score 4.27) had an excellent game down the wing, crossing the ball on Lukaku’s second and creating multiple other chances during the game. He had the fans serenading him multiple times during the game.

Catchy tune that, and we hope to hear it many, many more times this year.

Finally, we should mention the goalkeeper and defence too, as they register yet another clean sheet this young season. What other moments and players from the game stood out for you?
