Everton in talks with defender for new contract

New deal for Baines could take him into his late 30’s

According to the Liverpool Echo there is news coming out that Everton will look to sure up veteran left back Leighton Baines with a new long term deal. Having been at the club for nine seasons now and currently still with three years left on his deal, it appears Ronald Koeman and Steve Walsh want to ensure Baines remains here for their rebuilding of Everton.

Baines was one of the most vocal players against former manager Roberto Martinez saying that the team “lacked chemistry” under him and was one of the first to speak after the Koeman signing on how excited the whole team was to work for him. The new manager apparently feels similarly about the England international and is prepared to show it with a new deal.

The fullback is currently 31 years old so any deal over his current three years would put him into his late thirties and be his last with the team. That said he’s likely to get a nice pay raise and reward for being one of the team leaders. It was unlikely after suffering through injuries and at his age that Baines would be a target for other teams this transfer window, but this will also put any of those talks to rest as well.
