Spain vs Italy first, then England vs Iceland

The most interesting thing in the world football took place in New Jersey last night as Lionel Messi choked in a penalty shootout, allowing Chile to repeat as Copa America champs. It is the third straight summer in which Argentina has made the final of a major tournament only to be knocked off at the end. Following the loss, Messi called it quits for Argentina. Who knows if the “retirement” will last, but it happened.

As for the competition at hand, here is where Euro 2016 stands as the teams head into the final day of the Round of 16:

On the Everton front, Romelu Lukaku played 75 minutes for the Belgians yesterday as they crushed Hungary 4-0. The striker didn’t score any goals but looks to remain as the squad’s first choice up top.

Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady are all headed home after a tough 2-1 lost to hosts France yesterday. The Irish led 1-0 for more than half the game before Antoine Griezmann scored a brace in rapid succession to advance Les Bleus.

Today, two more Evertonians MAY get on the field, but probably not. John Stones and Ross Barkley are the only two non-goalkeepers on England’s team to not get on the field at any point thus far in the tournament. So, odds are they won’t start and it would seem highly unlikely that they appear off the bench. Ah well, here’s to hoping we get a few camera shots of them warming up at various points!

To the football...
