The new manager hasn’t even been announced yet and already the rumors are flying. The first up here is that Ronald Koeman will be raiding his former squad for a keeper. That keeper is England international Fraser Forster who is currently away for the Euro 2016 competition.
Injuries were an issue for Forster while with Southampton as he spent the first half of the season out with injuries. Upon his return though the team improved and he earned six clean sheets in the 18 matches he played in. He only allowed 17 goals in those games or less than one goal against per game.
At 28 years of age he is in the prime of his career in terms of ‘keepers and while no value has been mentioned his current perceived value is in the £10-15 million range. If Southampton are hesitant to sell though they could push for something in the £20 million range. Forster only signed new six-year contract extension a few weeks ago, strengthening the Saints’ hand still further.
It raises the question of what Koeman has in the plans for Joel Robles. It’s possible Roberto Martinez viewed him as the long term option here, but Koeman has no history with Robles and surely is taking an objective position. Even if Robles is going to get a shot Everton will need a second option to backup Robles or compete with him for the job. If Forster is that man though Robles is either sold or headed back to the bench.
