Referee Robert Madley will be in charge for Everton’s Premier League game this weekend away at Chelsea. He previously officiated the Blues on their trip to Bournemouth earlier this season, which resulted in Everton’s first loss under Ronald Koeman.
Previous to that, he was also the ref for the 4-0 humiliation in the Merseyside Derby late last season when he sent off Argentine defender Ramiro Funes Mori for stamping on Reds’ striker Divock Origi. Funes Mori followed that reckless tackle by kissing the Everton badge on his way off the field, an action that saw him receive both criticism and praise from different sections of the Blues fanbase.
Chelsea have had the referee only thrice, including an EFL Cup thriller when they knocked out Premier League defending champions Leicester City out in extra time 4-2.
Madley has brandished 39 yellow cards in just seven Premier League games this season, but no red cards. Everton fans will be hoping that he keeps a close eye on Chelsea’s Diego Costa, who has earned himself a bit of a reputation with embellishment and other misconduct on the pitch.
